Hello everyone!
We have built a version of the skippy filter but we want to install our awesome spillway made by koiguy1969.

our goal is to hide everything
we want to attached the liner around the spillway between the weir and the walls of the stock tank
We would love any help with this idea or if you don't like it feel free to share your idea :)

in this photo our water will come into the back through the bulkhead and then down to the bottom.
we aren't sure if we should cut the rim of the stock tank to install the weir or cut below the rim of the stock tank ?

what did you use to make yours ?
how did you attach it ?

We are very happy that koiguy1969 made our weir as requested and we got it in just a few days I can't wait to upload photos of it all installed :)

I see you have a stock tank that has those indentations or raised and lowered part on the inside and out side .I used a smooth stock tank the rubber one like they have at tractor supply .I know it is like a tote that has raised and lower areas and I always have to look foor a flat faced tote .I use tank adapters out the front also .Not sure how you would attach that with those non flat parts .I really not sure you can .

I would leave the lip of the stock tank as that is where it's strength is .If it does not fit in the lowered area not sure as you will have a gap .It would have to fit in the lowered area .But those tanks all get there strength from the lip just like any thing .But guessing koiguy would know if that is right .

the stock tank with the smooth sides is smaller but is made of hard rubber

AS YOU CAN SEE IF YOU LOOK AT MY INSTALL... I LEFT THE RIM... removing it, will take away from the tanks structural integrity. altho the weir will likely add more than the rim. why do anything to reduce it?
link.... https://www.gardenpondforum.com/topic/3510-koiguys-70-gal-skippy-style-filter/
can you post a picture of the inside and outside of the area you intend to mount on?
i just used a length of 2x4, put it up to the bottom of the lip (rim) and scribed my bottom cut line. i used an utility knife to cut my opening...fairly easy to do. use black eurethane caulk to seal it up, alitte on each surface, screw it together and aplly a light bead around opening after mounting.. or you can hold the weir in place mark the corners of the cutout, drill them and use a jig saw.

sissy... the stocktanks your talking about LPDE.(low density poly- ethelene) not near the strength of rubbermades, wich are HDPE. (high density poly-ethelene).
when you decide to add more thoughts, consider hitting the edit button and adding to the same post. instead of 3 posts in 5 minutes. with no other posts in between.
just a thought!

Definately leave the rim! We have one of his weirs as well. Something else I caught in your picture. The swirly bar on the bottom ... lift that off the floor an inch or two to let crap settle. Check out all of Koiguys pictures to see one of his being built. Hubby does something very similar.

I have had one of those tanks out for deer water for 10 years now and not a problem and they even stand in it .Sometimes I hit edit button and it does not work and sometimes I go to post and saving comes up and it does not post what I typed .Never thought of building out the front but it may be better to use a piece of pressure treated wood .I use one piece of regular wood and bugs ate it and it was not in the water but just dampness here causes it .They forrest alot here so lots of termites here ..Had to spray 2 of those rubbermade ones with that liquid rubber ,one was cracked and free and other one I bought just cracked while I was away and lost some of my plants because of it .Lucky I had turned off the pump before I left to go to NC .I figured my son would not check it .

IN FACT RAISE THE SWIRL BARS UP AS MUCH AS 5 OR 6 INCHES. (atleast up to the bottom ridge where you may want to locate your bottom media grid.) your running a 5000 gph pump. you'll be better off with them higher.because, the higher the flow rate, the longer things (debris, particulants, etc...) will stay in suspension. (harder to get to settle out)... when i ran 3150gph thru my falls i had 1000gph thru the filter and 2150gph
went directly into the top of the filter ,venturied for aeation, and for circulation, and so it would still come out the falls.

Thank you for catching/correcting that ... I just asked hubby how far his are ... on the 45 gallon stock tank, he said he only went about 2-3" off the ground, as the tub was so small ,.. on the 150 gallon stock tank, he said that one had the room, and he went about 6-7" off the floor, giving me the lecture of the higher it was set, the more that could settle ... Eventually I'll understand all this, and keep everything straight LOL.

another point i would like to make is the swirl bar plumbing angle and location. some people aim the outputs directly at the wall of the tank..this is not good. the water deflects off in every direction...no swirling just agitation. and the swirl is the secret to letting everything settle, and gather in the center. i plumbed mine with 22.5* elboes with a smoooth transition onto the tank wall. heres a sloppy but descriptive drawing of plumbing setups. the first tub is plumbed wrong. its aimed directly at the wall. it would work better if the pipes to the outputs were longer so the outputs were close to the wall. but the second is more efficient still. thats the way mine is plumbed.

i also find it funny when people try to make a "Skippy" style filter in a squared container. how do they think theyre gonna get a swirling in a square container? yes it will be an upflow filter, but not a Skippy style. ALL SKIPPIES ARE UPFLOW, BUT NOT ALL UPFLOWS ARE SKIPPIES!!!
photo example of incorrect plumbing......
CIMG2714.jpg

this plumbing will not cause a swirl, and being plumbed thru the wall near the bottom of tank will require a one way valve also. or if the pump is stopped for any reason the filter will "flush" or back drain back into the pond. carrying some filter debris with it.
