I have a very large bellied goldfish, everywhere I turn, it looks like it's dropsy. I'm told nothing can be done. Does the fish hurt? Can I make it more comfortable and how? do I have to separate it from the other two as they are very close/ I love my pets last Goldfish we had were called feeder fish, they lived 10yrs were about 3-5 lbs. each. This hurts us to see the one like this. Also to the person who posted the Mom found it not acceptable, that's too bad. Anyone who knows fish know they are smart as well as loving, the two we had, they allowed us to pet them and they tried to communicate. Thanks

Welcome, but sorry it's under these circumstances!

As Addy asked, can you post a picture and/or give us a little more information about your fish and what you are seeing with it that makes you suspect dropsy? How long has it been going on?

I have a couple of goldfish (Ryukins) that look this way sometimes, but I think that's the nature of that type (swim bladder problems and constipation). Also, a female will get a "large belly" when she's ready to spawn. Maybe it's not as bad as you think.

Is she still eating and swimming OK? Sorry to hear the fish is sick, and not too much may be done, just keep filters cleaned and water flowing. A gentle slow water exchange may be done to keep water fresher. If she is eating still, I might try Sissy's chopped garlic with food method. At this point it can't hurt. I think Sissy mixes the garlic with flood and lets stand for a short while before feeding. Garlic is very powerful and all may not be yet lost.

I once read that there is not one disease, no matter how bad, that somebody, somewhere, has not made a 100% recovery from..... so you see, all hope is never truly lost, as some will defy the odds and make a full recovery! :)

Welcome terifish

It's better to liquidize the garlic so that you soak the pellets in it , dont forget to shell the peas as they cannot digest the shell.
Chopped earthworm also acts a a dieretic an can help get things moving again .
Be aware though dropy comes in three forms bad water condiotions and overcrowding of a pond Bacteral and Viral.
Check your water perameters first.
It may be an idea to use an anti-bacterial treatment but be aware it will play havoc with your pond filters Viral ( nothing you can do about it apart from putting it in a QT tank add salt and hope that it pulls through).
I have a friend on another site who adds epsom salts to the QT tanks water .
she swears it helps.
Looking at your photo however I see no signes of pineconing this may not be dropsy gently squeese to see if you have a lump which would indicte a tumour of some sorts

Best of Luck
