Sorry to sound like a show-off, but I'm actually am very proud of myself :) My first ever furniture.

My son is 3 yo and I want to get a big boy bed for him. Looked for several weeks and still cant find anything reasonable so I decided to make him a bed from scratch. I'm hoping that he will be able to use this bed for at least 15 more years :)

This is what I accomplished in 2 days (about 10 hrs of work time) starting from getting woods to stained it. Still have to put finish coats on :)

Anybody have any tips on puting the polyurethane on the wood furniture?

wow very nice. When I use poly I brush it on with a good brush, use very fine sandpaper between coats to remove any bubbles etc. Do as many coats as you need.

Great job! Nice looking piece of furniture. Looks like your son is very happy to help build his new Big Boy bed. As Addy posted, put a layer on and allow to dry, take very fine sand paper and ever so lightly sand down any bubbles, imperfections, streaks etc. once done wipe down really good with a soft rag to remove dust from sanding and repeat these steps until you get the desired finish that appeals to you. I usually like three to five coats on furniture. I made our headboard for our bed about 10 years ago, It looks just like the day I finished it, although it's now a guestroom bed instead of our bed. The wife wanted all matching furniture when we bought the new house, I refused to try and make a dresser and end tables to match the headboard with all the other projects I had going on when we bought the house. LOL

Thank you! My husband didnt expect it to look so good so now he's on board :)

I did my third coat this morning, I think it'll be my final coat (dont really have time). There are many tiny bubbles and I cant make them go away, what is the best way to get rid of those bubbles? will it show? This last coat is a pretty thick one that's why there are many bubbles. If the bubbles show, do you think sand it down and do another thin coat would hlep? It seems like a thin coat has less bubbles to me (the first 2 coats I did).

I used sponge brush.

Yes, go with some really fine sand paper, sand in the same direction your brushing the clear coat on. The thicker you apply the clear the more likely there will be bubbles. Thin coats, sand thin coats. I couldn't get 100% out but by the third coat they had gotten to the point where they were really hard to see. The sponge may be leaving the bubbles as well, May want to try a regular bristle brush.

ahh, the spray sounds good. but I'm hoping to not have to buy anything anymore :( Will try to sand it today and apply the last thin coat and see how it goes... if I cant get all bubbles off I'll juts use spray.

Larkin, I have a normal brush, how do you clean the brush afterward? the brush is expensive!!
