I have a question for Koikeeper

Hi Koikeeper,

My goldfish like to play under the waterfall, but 1 in particular tries to jump leap out of the water (only under the waterfall) onto the liner edge and one time succeeded onto to a low lying rock and then flopped back in. Why do you think it does this. It's almost like watching a salmon try to swim upstream. The fish in question is a sarassa.

Hmmm. interesting.

Well, if a fish jumps out of the water, it can be because of poor water quality. However, you are saying that this fish only jumps under the waterfall, so it's likely not a water quality issue--it's that the fish is trying to have some fun. Unfortunately, this particular fish does not realize that he may be doing this at what might become his own expense.

Some particular fish are just jumpers by nature. Koiguy swears that Ogon koi are jumpers. I have several ogons and have never noticed this behavior in them, however. I had a fish I purchased a month ago that I noticed was jumping in the big bag when I bought him. I immediately said to myself, "uh-oh, I bet he's a jumper!" Sure enough, 24 hours later I found him dead as a stone about a foot away from the pond. Clearly, he was a jumper and, well, that didn't bode well for him.

So, it appears you have a jumper on your hands. He's probably enjoying leaping against the force of the waterfall, and the fellow is clearly taking that game very seriously.

To hopefully prevent a jumper from getting out, try to ensure the area around your waterfall is set so that if he happens to pop up there, he can safely flop back in safely. This could be the way you lean stones up, for example. Perhaps you can net the area around the waterfall to prevent him from jumping up toward the falls, or net the whole pond with black bird netting on a frame.

If you're unable to create a situation to protect him around your waterfall, there's not much else you can do with a jumper. Sooner or later, the owner of a known jumper will likely find him outside the pond.

to be more exact... the only fish i have seen jump were my 2 platinum ogons, but regularly. Dr Dave also will attest to this behavior with his platinums. the only ogons i have had are platinums, so i can only assume it may very well be in their behavior, but wouldnt assume that this behavior would apply to all.

Very interesting.. My kissing fish in my aquarium would jump out and I'd find them on the floor.

Well, the good thing is that he cannot jump out (at this size) because the rocks around the pond prevent this. and the rocks under the waterfall are all round, except the one flat one he made it onto. Hopefully he doesn't get better at it as he gets bigger. (which is happening before my eyes..am I feeding them too much? I have noticed that they have gotten bigger since I bought them on June 13)

I was hoping you were going to tell me that "she" wanted to lay eggs.

I am getting attached to these guys, I would really hate to lose one. I count them everyday...it's easy when you only have 4 of each and they stay together all the time.

No, egg laying would not be making a fish sprint outta the water. And, yes, it's the growing season and they do grow a bit per week, As long as they are hungry, keep feeding. I feed mine 3x per day and sometimes 4 if I can get around to it. But mostly it's 3x.

Koiguy, I have 2 platinum ogons (they are also gin rin, however). Largest is maybe 8 or 9 inches. The other is maybe 7-8. Neither are jumpers (knock on wood). I'm not opposed to believing that a particularly fish breed/type can be jumpers tho. With koi, I would believe anything.

if i sat out at the pond some days i would see at least one of my platinums do some aerial acrobatics.... even in the basement pond,...cost one of them its life...the other was breakfast for a heron. maybe mine were retarded, who knows but they were my only jumpers...this is gonna sound like B.S.,and i'm probably wrong, but i could swear i saw one do the tail walk thing like a dolphin at SEA WORLD.

LOL! I would NOT be surprised to see a koi do the dolphin move!

When I feed my koi they get very excited and leap a bit outta the water--particularly the larger fish. The big ones like to make a big splash as they go after pellets.

They are very interesting creatures for sure!

My yellow yambuki's are both jumpers at dusk. My husband and I say they are doing a triple toe loops for those of you who like to watch skating. We give them scores. They are so much fun to watch. They stay in the deep area to do this so hopefully we won't have any fatalities.

lol... You have to know the moves of the olympic skaters and how they are judged. It's a jump with a three time spin in the air. So we say our Koi is doing a triple toe loop when they do the dolphin flip.

sorry i'm straight...dont understand figure skating...or balet either wich looks like figure skating without the skates! you see, my testosterone inhibits my brain cells from reacting to either in a positive manner

Mrskoiluver, I think it's the sign of a true man which can appreciate this! After all, what man can't resist a charming girl spinning around in a short skirt--whether on skates or ballet slippers! LOL!
