I've always heard people talk about koi jumping out of ponds, but I thad never seen it before. This morning, I watched my biggest koi jump out of the water, smack the side of a rock, flop around on top of the lily pads for a few seconds before getting himself back into the water.

I was just standing out there before work, and my 5 gallon bucket mechanical filter in thwe bottom of the pond was standing upright (i try to keep it on its side, but most of the time when i drop it back in there after rinsing it stands upright) so i stuck the handle of my pond net down there and flipped it on its side. I must have scared that koi, because he sure jumped.

I stood there for a few minutes hoping to make sure he was okay, but he must have retreated to the depths. I hope he calmed down and I dont find him on the bank when I get home.

When I put an extra pump in my pond to circulate water my biggest jumped out while swimming in the current. Luckally I was there to see it or she would have fried on the brick patio.

Never had any goldfish do that but have heard of Koi and Shubbies doing it now and then. Would be sad to find one out of the pond and dead.

I lost one fish to jumping out a couple of months ago and thats when I put the screening over the pond .Just before I went down to the pond and guess what one of my butterfly koi was in the plant ring chowing down and Aggie told on him .I would not have noticed him if Aggie wasn't pushing the plant ring around in circles .

The farm where I buy my fish has water running into several of their tanks through pipe above the water line of the tanks. They all have screen guards set back from the entry water flow to keep the koi from swimming upstream and jumping out. I have lost a couple of nice fish because of this.
