I have 2 comets and 2 shubunkins. 1 comet is definitely got a swollen belly and is being chased for the past week by both shubunkins who have white bumps on their gills and edges of pectoral fins. I have made a spawning mop because I don't have enough plants yet. My question is, how long will this go on before she lays the eggs. I have a small goldfish bowl waiting to save some fry.

thats a good question...the only answer is: when shes ready. the more they bump, chase, and stimulate her the faster it will come. even when she starts releasing eggs it can go on for days. and is likely to happen at least one more time this summer. you may want another mop or 2 ready, if you plan on raising lots of babies...the spawners will eat the eggs, but the ones not participating will follow behind and gobble up the eggs as soon as they can get to them.

This is the week of the full moon. I am thinking with the cold front I have here in Indianapolis and the full moon week that I may have some spawning start at any time. 8 mops in and ready to go. Others ready to drop in as those are pulled.

Yikes, you're pretty serious. I was just hoping to save some from getting eaten. I have a small pond and only want a couple more fish. What do you think the Shubunkin-comet mix will make?

Well baby goldfish I hope! jk LOL

OK, The wife says it's a good question so I'll add a little more. They will be a mix, orange are comets, red and whites are sarassa'a calico are shubunkins and brown are common. You could get one of the above or a mix of all of the above. They are all goldfish and can produce any of those.

OH, BTW, If you throw a fantail in there they can get into the mix as well. with what you have now you most likely will only get straight tailed fish, If you put a fantail you can get a mix of all the straight tail colors with a fantail. Thought you might find that of some use.

A standard fantail should be able to withstand the same as your comets, Wakins and Watonai should also survive and could produce fantails as well. orandas, telescopes, pearlscales and the fancies strains probably wouldn't.

I have spawns of comets and shubunkins and some that are mixed between the two. They are quite lovely. Some are orange and white like a comet, but have black spots and some hints of a translucent blue. It's a beautiful thing to watch them change. the plain goldies made lots of brown and two years later, they are still some turning orange. We have had a few orange ones turn white, too! Good luck and I wish you many beautiful fry!

Oh, yes Addy, same here with the fry. Every week we would rescue a few survivors. I even had some that somehow got in the floating plant nets. I figure that is how a lot of them survived not getting eaten. The fish were on a tear this morningm the longest I've seen. This may be the week in NJ
