I normally buy a 5.27 lb of Koi Vibrance fish food and was curious as to how long larger packages would last. I have been buying 5.27 lb bags but would like to save some $ by buying the 8.27 lb zip lock bag (or larger). I have approximately 20 fish in my small pond, about 540 gallons, containing mostly shubunkins and 3 Koi which are now about 10-12 long inches in size and growing fast with big appetites. My 5.27 bag has lasted about a year but the Koi are now really devouring the food quickly. I had thought of buying a 16.5 lb bag that would bring the cost down from $4.80 a lb to $3.60 a lb, a pretty good saving but not sure how long it would last so really looking at the 8.27 lb size (am I wrong on the 16.5 lb size?). I don't really think zip lock bags last very long but perhaps I am wrong. The Vibrance Koi food that I am referring to is made by TetraPond. The fish reallly like this food and they have wonderful color.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks...........Ralph

For what it's worth. I personally found that by spending more on a quality food, one that is highly digestible with less waste makes keeping the pond easier. I fed Tetra for many years. Once I swapped to higher quality food I had a lot less waste to deal with. There are many brands out there and you may pay a dollar or two more per pound. But the over all water quality will improve. On tetra and most brands of koi food, one season is about the limitation of the food once it's been opened. Keeping the majority in a air tight container will help it last a little longer and be fresher for the fish in the long run.

Ralph there is also the problem of the shelf life of your food pellets to think about, even in a ziplock bag they arent going to last forever so its counter productive to buy large amount at a time.
Your best bet is to weigh the amount you feed them each day to see how much you are using then do some simple math to work out the amount you'll need fo the season. and buy that amount .
Most koi foods have sell by dates on the bag or container they are impregnated with vitamins etc which are vitally important to the growth and well being of your fish.
Tetra is a food I wouldnt use go for one of the more expenive brands of koi food , you can buy different mix's for instance I get my feeds via Holland , I feed wheatgerm and garlic in the spring , then in the late spring early summer we use a special Japanese mix as well as high protien pellets which is to build up our koi ready for the long bleak winter at 51% protien its amazing just how quickly they put on the fats needed for the coming winter months (this would also apply to your koi and shubunkins).
As we swing back into late summer early autumn we switch back to wheatgerm and garlic only stopping feeding when the temperature goes bellow 10.c .
A word of caution many companies now claim its safe to feed bellow 10.c as far down as 5.c personally I wouldnt trust it when the koi hit 2c they go torpid meaning any feed left in the gut could have the potential to rot and kill your fish.
It is only when the temperature has been above 10.c for a few weeks and is steady that you start feeding your koi and shubunkins again .
So all in all your wasting money buying large amounts that your fish cannot possibly eat in a whole season.

Thank you for your prompt response. Unfortunately I don't know what is a better food to feed them but am willing to buy better. I really never gave it much thought as they seemed to love what I was giving them and were growing so fast and seem so healthy. As I mentioned I only have 3 Koi because of the size of my pond but judging by how fast they are growing I'm not sure if my pond will eventually be too small for them. I guess I will find out soon enough.

If you have suggestions for better food than what I am feeding them please let me know and I will definitely not buy large quantities.

Thanks again................Ralph

Hello and thank you for all this good information. As I mentioned to my previous poster I have no idea what is the best food that I can buy either locally or online. The fish seem to love what I am giving them, they devour the food very quickly that sometimes I wonder if I am feeding them enough. I don't want to over-feed so I try to feed only what they will eat within 8--10 minutes. I do give them a mixture of food in the fall and winter by combining fall/winter Tetramin although the winters here are rather mild. Is there a Koi food that I can buy off the shelf that you would recommend? Any suggestions will be appreciated. I definitely will do as you say and calculate how long the 5.27 bag of food will last and buy only what will last during one season, thank you for that suggestion.

Thank you and Best Regards..............Ralph

Ralph find yourself a good koi dealership website and take a look at what they have on offer there are many things a good food should take into consideration such as colour lustre some even make your whites a brilliant white.
I googled these three koi dealerships that have in our view gret specialst koi foods :-

http://www.tsekoi.com/

Is anyone willing to just name a brand of food?

I have found Hikari makes a great goldfish food. I wonder if the same can be said for their Koi food?
I used to use them but dont even rate them Ralph is after specialist koi foods

I'm sorry to be so disagreeable today Dave but I feel like he just wants to buy the proper amount of decent food. I only have 2 koi in my pond with 25 fish so I haven't a clue about koi food.

I purchase Blackwater Creek Koi food. I feed the Cool Weather Season variety in the spring and am getting ready to switch over to the max growth one soon. I bought mine while on sale at Drs. Fosters and Smith. I have 5 koi in my 1670 gallon pond.

I recommend Blackwater creek for those wanting to step up in quality yet still stay in a lower price range. Koi seem to really like it, I feel like the waste to intake ratio is far more acceptable and it's available through several online sites as well as many retail stores. For top grade food hat really works as far as less waste and better muscle tone, Kenzen. Kenzen is one of the most digestible foods IMO on the market. Price gets a little steeper but you will see a notice in water quality and overall look of the koi are almost certain to improve. On the negative note, Not as easy to locate and the price is more than double per pound to tetra.

Tula Larkin and myself disagree with that wholeheartedly dieslplower why not be brave and go out on a limb yourself and buy some myfriend and with that I rest my case :)
Ralph you have two people here who have previewed this food for you with glowing reports , now its up to you my friend
As to the price you always pay extra for specialist feeds so it is going to cost more however the results are stunning to say the very least Ralph (y)
But you like us have to be brave and take that leap now I'd never use a brand name

Hi Dave, thanks for the info and the links. I checked out the 3 links and it seems Blackwater Creek is very popular. I guess my path forward is to learn more about Koi food and which is best for each season. I only have 3 Koi but I want them to be healthy and with vibrant colors. Right now they look great with the food I am giving them but have no idea if there is more contamination caused by the food ingredients. It appears there are better, healthier and cleaner foods available so I will research this and if I become confused or have questions I will check back in this forum. I really appreciate all the information provided by you and the others.

Thank you All.

Best Wishes......................Ralph :)

Can you please recommend the best koi/shubunkin/comet food for the best color and least waste?
