When the directions say, "2 inches below the water....." Does that mean that you sink the pot where the top of the soil is at 2"?

I ordered and received some new plants yesterday, and they all say that. They are marginal/bog appropriate plants. I planted them in a series of dishwashing tubs.

crown of plant 2 inches below surface, dirt level 2 inches down since usually crown of plant is at dirt level

Nope. That is maximum depth the seller recommends. It's like when a nursery sells a plant and says Zone 5. It doesn't mean the plant will only grow in zone 5 or that the plants must be kept at -15F. It means that's the coldest zone the seller recommends for the plant.

All marginals do better with their crowns above water. Less chance of rot, more gas exchange with the roots. Here in Phoenix many yards have marginals planted in regular flower beds.
