This is the first year in 8 i have clear water in my pond. I notice when messing around with plants etc in the pond my hands smell like wet dirt or wet peat moss. is this normal or something i should be concerned about? never noticed it before this year.

More than likely just from the muck on the roots .I trim my roots but the plants are all bare root .Just a natural smell .

not messing with roots just pinching off the dead flowers and leaves from the lilly's and the filter pads is where i notice the smell.

The filter pads yes the plants no. it's not foul like a fart or rotten eggs or sulfur. Just that wet/damp soil smell.
