I had a nice 5000 gal swimming pool installed mainly to gratify my grand children who would visit us periodically. We ourselfs could not use the pool because of eardrum problems. The todlers grew up and are outgrown adults now and do not have an apetite for poolstuff. Instead of maintaining a swimming pool wasting lots of chemicals for nothing I decided to put new friends in it. Now for a year and a half I have daily contact with koi who know me and I can distiguish most of them. I bought 5 kois and have now more than 25 of them swimming aound. I had to learn a lot to keep them happy and woul love to have friends around who could help me with that. Now I have a problem with algea control. I hope to find some answers through this forum.

If I get murky water sometimes I will fill a plastic basket w/ holes in it full of the white batting..............why can't I ever remember what we call that stuff..............upholstery batting......no that's not it..........what's it called sissy? Anyways if you stick the basket under the falls or under just tubing running over it it will collect all that fine gunk including floating algae. Then you can clean it and put it back in again till you like the clarity of your pond. Warning, it may take many times and days to collect it all. If you have a problem w/ the long stringy algae I like to use the 100% clay kitty litter w/ no additives in it to kill that algae. I just pour a bunch into a netted bag and stick it under my falls or in my waterfall reservoir and I also use it to pot up my lilies so there is plenty of it in the pond. Also use the barley bale I bought by taking some out of the garbage can I have it stored in and putting a big hunk of it in a netted bag also. That helps get rid of string algae also. Oh wait just thought of what we call the white stuff...........it's quilt batting........ha ha brain kicked into gear :banghead3:

Hi Bernie and welcome to the forums. Interesting biography you have!

Are you down in Miami? We have had such a warm winter (Central Florida) that the algae has been going gang busters. Not enough of the normal summer water plants to help choke it out yet.

I don't have koi, so I can't say for certain, but 25 koi may be a bit much for 5000 gallons. Depends a lot on your filtration. Can you tell us more about you run and filter your pond? If you are using UV now may well be the time to plug it in down in Miami.

Welcome to this site. I am pretty new to it as well but it is a friendly site with lots of people willing to help, share and what ever you need. I am from Canada so my requirements are much different than yours I am still anxious to see the direction your pond is going.
