Hello to everybody in this online 'community'. I started a pond project 2 years ago and just got mega busy with other stuff and just left it (i'm not kidding!!). Anyway, the hard work is done in that the pond is dug out.

Originally, I had planned on it being a Koi pond - but as my first post elsewhere on the forum shows - i'm unsure if I can afford the running costs that go with it. Therefore, I'm looking at possible solutions and hoping to harness the wealth of experience here in this regard.

One option is to pump water from a nearby stream (not even sure if this will be any cheaper)

The second option is that I go with a 'natural' pond - with minimal mechanical pumping (and obviously no koi). I'd like to think that I could still have some fish in it if the pond is well 'balanced'...although I'm unsure about this...and hoping for advice on the matter.

Rgds.

Glad you joined! everybody will help you out. Koi are fussier fish, goldies shubunkins etc are easier.

Your natural steam might have parasites, if you do that you may want to stick with local "wild" fish

Hi borderfox and welcome! If you are thinking low maintenance then be sure to keep your bio-load down and stick with smaller fish like goldfish. A pond can be really easy to maintain when there is a lot of water and not too many fish. Then you can use smaller pumps and filters and not bother with a skimmer. I would build a waterfall because it will naturally aerate the water.
