Well all has been quiet on the Heron front until this morning. Luckily I went out early to let the dogs out and the Heron flew away. I checked the camera and I did not see him catch anything but it was still dark. The fish are hiding. I believe I see all the koi. He is a early bird, looks like he came in around 4:30 am

Follow the stream down, you can see him in the right upper corner

Oh dear :( It's so neat you can watch your pond / stream on a camera.
Tula in the UK its now a sad fact that a koi keeper with a collection of koi needs to add extra security to their home , we did this by combining the fact we were broken into in 2012 and the fact that koi thefts in the Devon area or now on the increase.
So we bought a security system that you can add cameras too which currently runs two cameras one in the house one overlooning the koi pond just as the UK Police suggested "one well placed camera can take the place of lots of camera's so we in reality are covered .
As your collection grows more monitory value is added too it even if they didnt cost that much to start with.
So what starts out with one koi total cost say £120.00 soon mounts up in value and a pond fiull of koi is suddenly worth from as little as £45.00 to thousands .
So you can see its worh the money on the system you have to install to stop theives stealing them, infact it makes good scense

Way back when we had koi a couple of no goods stole our two biggest then attempted to sell them to local pets stores. Both stores knew us so they called us after refusing to buy. The police were called but by that time our koi were found dead on the side of a street. If the fish had to die I had rather it be an act of nature, meaning a heron.

We have a hard time catching our koi - I wonder how these thieves are so adept at fish catching?

Very patient stalking, I watched the ones around our pond, 30 minutes to just walk up to it, standing totally still in the pond or on the edge forever waiting for the snack to swim by. If the bottom gets stirred up a little, when I am in the pond, the fish swim right up for whatever snack they can find. Not sure if they do the same when ever a heron walks in the pond. If they do easy pickings

Oh I know how the heron do it! We have lots of natural ponds surrounding us and have watched the green, blue, and the snowy egrets hunt for fish - they are masters! I meant the human thieves. It takes me a LONG time to catch one of our koi. How do these human predators - who I would assume are trying to make quick work of it to avoid getting caught - manage? Obviously they do - I just need to learn their quick catching technique! Ha!

Hi Dave what camera system you have?
New
Hi Wayne we bought a Swann Advanced security system DVR4-1425tm 4 channel Digital Video Recorder & 2x PRO 535tm Cameras Advanced Series D1.
Iike I said if we wish to we could add another two cameras, one out the front, one down the side of the house but again as the police said we dont in reality need that number of cameras
The resolution on these cameras is second to non and the colour reproduction is fantastic, we could have bought a remote system but we have so much in the way of metal in the walls doorframes and windows that we doubted it would have worked but the wires are all extremely well hidden
