Hello, like most people I got very bored over quarantine and decided a new project would be a great way to keep myself busy. So I decided that I would like to expand upon the little fountain I had. At first it was just going to be a small waterfall Flowing into a very small basin maybe 100 gallons at most. but as I began to do more research I was drawn in to the pond world. I decided I would go a little bigger so I could have a couple goldfish but I kept stumbling across people talking about the mistakes they made of making their pond to small. So in the end after a few weeks of digging I used up all the space my dad would let me and now I have a roughly 700 gallon pond and 12 foot long stream with a waterfall that drops over a foot into the pond. In the pond I started with four goldfish (2comets and 2 shubunkins) any where from 3 to 6 inches long. I also started with 5 mosquito fish. I now have had lots of babies. I have anywhere from 4 to 8 new baby goldfish and over 30 mosquito fish. I have a big yellow flag irise that I was given from a friends lake house, a dwarf cattail, a black gamecock iris, some corkscrew rush, and a little creeping Jenny. This forum was so helpful when I was deciding to build my pond and I am so exited to be apart of it as I plan for year two.

The first photo is from early this summer and the second two are current (the water is very low right now). I’m still working on figuring out how best to hide the liner behind the falls.

welcome and you can expect babies like that every year ,only way to control it is to remove eggs or let frogs remove them .Frogs will get out of control also .I take at least 2 to 3hundred frogs to farm ponds around here every year or the muck up the pond

Okay thanks good to know. This year I intentional harvest some eggs off of my water hyacinth and raised them in a 20 gallon tub. In the future I may be doing the opposite to keep my numbers in check.

Well done. a little fine tuning and you'd never know the house wasn't built around your pond. And you probably inadvertently made a biological filter with your stream theres so much oxygen there and surface area it should help maintain some healthy water

Welcome! Great job, nice looking pond!

I quit feeding in the summer (have lots of plants for them to eat) but is also helps them eat up the eggs that are laid. Good population control.
