My name is Dave my partner Val and I are both koi keepers, founding fathers to the Plymouth and District koi club est 1991 and members of the British Koi Keepers Society since 1989.
We have a 1,000 gallon ( imperial), above ground koi pond with 4 inch bottom drain and a huge filtersystem.
The pond is a retro fitted former koi retailers Quarentine pond our crowning glory so far is we were nominated into the uk koi magazines koi hall of fame in 2009.
I also run the Koi Keepers Unleashed koi forum
Like Dr Novak I have alot to offer and appologise that we lost through spammers the Anoxic thread that your forum was interested in this appology is also extended to Dr Novak.
However we are attempting to rebuild it and make it better than before.
We have a fish/koi health Library to die for and thanks to Spike Cover former head of the AKCA health officials, have done reviews on most of the books and will post a list later.
This is from the novice level all the way up to verteranary and Profesonal levels with books on koi koi health breeding koi etc.
Koi for us is a passion, we have two koi that have been with us now for 26 years which we consider to be pets our other koi we show .
We started out not in a pond but a huge indoor aquarium that after any years we had to give up because due to ill health on both our parts , not wanting to hate the hobby we so love it was decided to buy the QT pond and retrofit it for use as a full tlme koi pond.
Our hobby has paid for itself over the years with the sale of koi after we had grown them on to 24" this way it has become a self perpetuating hobby as with the money always £100 UK nothing mpore weve invested in either young koi to bring on, food, equipment and those all important books which at the last count had just passed the 50 mark with Authers names Titles and ISBN numbers for folks interested in buying any of the titles.
We passonately believe in books they are a great educational tool for the budding fish keeper without them mistakes are often made and sadly fish die.
My pet hate being fish shops who sell fish to people ypu know just havent got a clue and wish it was law that each person had to buy a book when first purchasing fish
Our pond after four years has just been finished and has been built by our nieghbour and fried Jeff.we have a huge QT tank which has its own filtration, UV-C and is able to be drained by a 2" slide valve on the bottom edge of the filtration section.
We have large 32" vortex style filters the first being a vortex propper the next two being dedicated filters with Japanese matting , in the second filter there is also a large bag of zeolite and sponges, in the third lithaqua ( calcified seaweed ) and large sheets of filterwool, last in line is a large barrel filter filled with k1 filtermaterial Aqua one Bio balls the pump is an inline dry pump an Oase 3500 last but not least we have an Aquapond 36 watt UV-C.
Koi wise we own 14 all being different .
Though our health is bad we hope for at least another 25 years in the hobby .
We also own a microscope a Bresser x40-x1024 with ocular we do our own scrapes have a large first aid kit dedicated totally to koi and have before done minor proceedures and are fully trained in anaethatizing fish safely our anesthetic of choice being MS222.
I've attached 4 photos two of our indoor setup and two of the pond in it's unfinished state but with the koi in residence sorry about the double photo

Sadly the tank has been sold on to a marine specialist but it served us well for 22 years prior to going into our pond it was with filtration 200 gallons imperial messurements 6 x 2 x 2.5 the filters were a fluval FX5 and an Eheim 2080 profesional III.
In the siummer we added a chiller to the tank which was an Aqua one chiller with titanium heat exchangers capable of chilling the tank down to 15c.
We also had a airtec 40 airpump on it supplying six pond sized airstones, you can see from the imaculate condition of the koi that everything worked well .
Aye up Bekky thas from Manchester I see Lass, as we say up North ?
I was born and raised in Oldham but stayed in Plymouth after serving in the Royal Navy lol

WELCOME TO OUR FISH FAMILY  DAVE and VAL
Will you both be participating in our great forum? Hoping so, as I have learned much from the wonderful people in my short time spent on here, and am looking forward to learning much from you as well :)
I am currently "checking out" ( lol ) this Anoxic filtration; very intriguing; and I because I have already dug a hole for a bog filter to start before winter sets in here, I am seriously considering trying my hand at it.
Again welcome to our forum, I'm sure that you will feel at home here :D

Yes jw he's a rescue cat from a cat horder most probably its from inbreeding but hey he's different , the Vet see's no reason to cut it off.
Basically its the tip of his tail that has grown on the underside of his tail which itself is shorter than usual .
He has the best temerament of any of the males weve ever had apart from the sadly departed Dillon who wast known for his smarts but he was my shadow and at one stone four ounces was a big boy.
Jack is coming up the same way as Dillon but is smaller , he was born on April fools day a year and three months ago and came to us by the UK's Cat protection people who are like minded catty people who go that extra mile for cats and are a great bunch of people

Hi Dave,

Can you tell me what the maintenance routine was for the indoor aquarium that you kept your koi in?

Thanks,
Mitch

I did a monthly gravel clean syphoned from the tank by an Ehiem 2217 which we use as a vac , I then drained 40% of the water and piped it back in at temperature done by use of a splitter hose one on the hot tap the other on the cold I would also clean the large powerhead and the uptake tube it sits on and the tank was ready to go again.
The filters an Eheim proffesional III 2080 and a fluvel FX5 are cleaned on a two monthly basis alternately, we also had 15 watt sterilizer.
Now with the sterilizer I change the bulb every year
Last but not least we had a 300watt chiller unit we ran in the summer powered by an eheim 2217, we would do a partial water change every two weeks on top of the usual maintenance and that was it I hope this helps Mitch
