So all is well in my pond except for my two hardy water lillies I purchased from Waterloo Gardens last summer. They were advertised as "Maylas" and they certainly seemed it. They were magnificant! They were also the only potted plants I placed in the deep part of my pond over the winter ( about 5ft down). All of the others I left on a shelf a foot and a half below the surface. Everything else is flourishing already. Not a sign from the lillies. I moved them to the shelf about 2 weeks ago and still, nothing. pond is full sun and water temp has been everywhere from 58-72 degrees the past 3 weeks. What does everybody think? Is it hopeless or am I in for a pleasant surprise?
As always, Thanks all.

Out of five potted lilies, I have one that couldn't wait to send up lily pads and blooms, and two that are trying to do something, but little sign of any blooms. The rest are just sending up lily pads.

Thanks for the responses. They are in the originally pots. (purchased last summer). Fertilized them already this season, 2 weekends ago.
Nothing from either yet. As soon as it stops pouring around here, i'll take some pics and post em.

I wouldn't be too concerned yet. Like I said mine just started sending anything up and they are small pads yet. I think in the next 2 weeks they will start really coming alive.

We all need to remember that the frost warning for us northerners is really May 15. This year it seems like that will not happen, but we never have had warmth so soon. Everything above ground has developed about two to three weeks too soon because of the heat wave we had. The nights have still been chilly. I too am waiting for things to pop and really can't wait. Moving the lilly to shallow water was a good move. Five foot depth I bet the water temp is pretty cool at the bottom there. Good luck!

I transplanted all of my water lilies a month and half ago and I've had lily pads on the surface of the water for over a month now. One of the mature lilies has already sent up two 'Eligant' blooms. All of my store bought lilies are hardy type. I haven't done anything special other than re-pot them all in pea gravel.

I have one water lilly that has about 10 pads stretching out across the pond. I have one petal that broke the surface and will probably bloom by the weekend. My lilly is buried under a rock and not in a pot. Is that a problem? What do I do in the fall? Do I just cut the lillies back and leave the roots buried under the rock?

As long as your not squishing the rhyzone or roots your o.k and your roots have direct exposure to the water, thats a good thing...easy feeding. Thats why many of us plant in peagravel and small stone instead of clay...direct contact with food source. make sure if you have koi that the roots arent accessable...they will eat them.
