The water temp is 6*c the koi is swimming normal looks as fit as dog! no unusual behaviour the growths look like small polystyrene balls perfectly round and pure white (the koi is mainly white with pure white fins and tail, getting a picture is difficult as its pitch black outside and is when i get home, bit of a naff photo, but its the koromo in the middle bottom

Dont worry Slick it looks as though your korromo has a case of what we call koi pox its a viral infection that normally will infect koi at the lower temperatures we get during the winter months
As a virus its a form of herpes that has a very low infection rate, you may see only one koi with it in your pond showing these waxy like growths with the rest of the ponds population staying healthy withn the pond with the infected koi "showing no such growths" .
For some unknown reason our last korromo came down with it too (must like them )
As your ponds temperature starts to rise above 10c they will start to disapear again , however this doesnt mean your koi is now free from the disease it may very well come back next winter.

Koi/fish pox come out a slightly differing colour on each fish Slick.
Yours is brilliant white in colour but as you can see here with Maggies beautiful goldfish with koi/fish pox it being a slightly orangey white in colouration the virus though called fish pox is the same virus.
Again the same rules apply in that the fish loose it as the water temperature goes up again in the spring,
There is also a third varient which goes by the name of Papillloma again like koi/fish pox it has a very low level of infection in the pond but unlike koi/fish pox Papillomas grow in large areas along the hard leading edges of the fins but may be present all over the fishes body they are slightly smaller at around 5mm .
However pappiloma may present as tumours witha red to pinkish growth , these however may need to be removed surgically by the vet or local koi health specialist.
The areas where they have been removed being treated topically with malachite Green then sprayed with propolis otherwise secondary infections can occur .
A Tip save money on Propolis by buying it from your local health food store where iy can be bought in both liquid and spray form, propolis can also be added to pellets as tonic/ health boost to your koi and goldfish

@Dave 54 I have resisted the temptation to euthanize this big guy [he was one of the first fish addded to the pond], but after reading about "koi pox," and after receiving advice and encouragement from you guys, I've decided against doing so. It's apparently not contageous as long as you maintain good water quatlity -- I was most concerned with my other fish would catch it. So, I'm just watching this fish and as long as he is healthy, happy, and not having problems eating, I'll keep him

Real glad you did Maggie as they can lead long and happy lives even with the fish pox in reality all it does is marr the look of your fish thats all, interestingly there was a trial in the UK some time ago of a paste that you spread over the waxy growths which would then drop of but strangely it never got past the trial stage whch was being run by a number of Dealers as to what happened no one knows as it was quietly shelved .
Nothing more has been heard of it , which is strange when you come to think of it .

Dave54 I'm very sorry about the late reply! very early starts and very late finishes work (The joys of being a steel worker) i hope it is carp pox, i have a sanke with the pox one i inherited but on that fish it looks more like wet
candle wax but on the koromo it looks more like small hard white balls on the sanke even in summer it never really cleared up, I do hope it's not the latter as our local vet is fine with cats and dogs, but i would not trust them with a 18 inch female koromo. so now I'm completely out of my depth, iI hav
e only been keeping koi for about 2 years,I have collected the best koi i could afford but now i dont know, all i can do is wait and see and pray its only the pox but many thanks in taking the time in reading my post and taking the time to answer

That changes things it could well be an auto immune response to something.... or worst case senario Nodular disease Slick.
Nodular disease can affect the body gills and fins of your koi it can also be internal infecting organs and tissues .
They are acctually cysts and the bad news is these cysts are highly contageous, as they contain thousands of tiny parasitic spores which when reeleased can be eaten by other koi thus spreading the diisease.
When internal organs and muscles are infected they may be passed via the fishes waste the spores can infect invertabrate hosts which are in turn eaten by the other koi in the pond thus causing further infection .
Theres no cure and its best you move the koi to a QT fasility or Euthanate however dont take my word on it mate you need to get a person out to confirm if I'm right or wrong , all we can do is hop they havent spread to your other koi if I'm correct
Like I said I may be wrong I've never acctually come across a case before but your saying they were there during the summer instantly started ringing alarm bells with me...I really hope I'm wrong on this
