Hello to all.
It's good to be back. It's been a long time but I have been following along as best I can.
I hope all are well.
Along with my hello, I thought I would give a pond update along with some pictures.
My pond is now in its third year and has clearly grown up. As you can see in the pictures my plant life in the surrounding (wet) areas have exploded. The forget-me-nots and water mint are now ground cover, as well as fish food as I allow it to grow into the water in a number of places. I do have to pull it frequently as if left unchecked the water mint would choke all other life out. I bought 2 water hyacinth and 2 water lettuce in late spring and tossed them into my water fall filter. As you can see, they have gone crazy. I have never had this much surface coverage and this little string algae. The only downside is they have completely smothered my lillies, canna, etc. My fish seem to like it so much, as do myself and my kids as we watch the fish swim in and out and sometimes on top of the plants, that i can't get myself to pull some out.
New to the pond is the second waterfall. (left side of the pond) It is fed by a separate pump, on bottom of pond, and runs through a biological filter before returning to the pond via the falls.
Creating this pond has been a fantastic experience. I apologize for being gone for so long but am, as always, incredibly thankful to everyone in this community for your creativity, know-how and advice. I have benefitted tremendously and know I will continue to do so.
All my best for a wonderful summer and fall season,
Big Red
P.S. To those in the community suffering from yesterday evening's tragic events; your sons and daughters are in our hearts and prayers. They remain our heroes and will never be forgotten.

Thanks! Good to be back. All my fish are doing great...with one exception. I had my first jumper 3 weeks ago. I walked out to the pond and one of my comets was laying dead a good 6 inches from the pond. Devastating. I have heard Koi can jump, but no one from my pond ever has. Sounds callous but at least it wasn't one of our favorites.

I have lost a few small ones, they have jumped up on lily pads, probably running from one of the big ones.

Oh no addy I would think they would just flop off the pads and back into the water. Maybe in the heat if it took too long the fry would just get too hot and succumb.

It was incredible. If you look at the first picture above, it was actually past the two flat stones in front of the pond. So it was probably a foot away. I have no idea how it got out, and how it got that far from the pond. Anyway, it has not happened again, so I am hoping it was a one time deal.

Sissy: My pond is in full sun...so i have struggled with string algae in the past. I have continued to add plants, and have made changes which have led to more success this year. For example, I don't use any dirt in pots. I repotted all my plants in rock and they have flourished. I believe they better compete this way.

Interestingly enough, a new issue that I have never faced before, but am dealing with this summer is constantly taking out my filter net and hose cleaning it. It is getting so clogged that it is seriously restricting the flow of waer to the pump. At the moment I have to do this every 3-4 days. Not that big a deal but never had this issue before. This ever happened to anyone else?

what is clogging it? I clean my leaf basket about every 3 weeks or so, maybe longer.

Bad water can make them jump.

Yeah, have heard that. Water's fine though.

Take a look at these two pictures..the first is 9 days ago. Check out the water hyacinth spilling down the waterfall. It rooted in the rocks all the way down. I have never seen anything like it. This never happened the previous two summers.
The second was yesterday...notice its spread in the pond, and AFTER I pulled it all out from the falls, its coming back again!

The others are just some other fun pics of the pond and gardens.

You are lucky to have the hyacinth grow so nicely for you and all your pix are very pretty.
