Our 500 gallon pond is green again, and again, and again, Nothing we do fixes it. We have been told to drain 50% off, add some algae cleaner, snales, sucker fish, algae eaters, ext. ext. ext.

Our store bought mechanical/biofilter.

Monday I'm going to try and get a 55 gallon drum and start working on it.

the problem with algecide is it kills large numbers of algea at one time which are left as dead plant matter to supply food for the next round...

ok, let's step back a second.

For one, that store bought mechanical filter you have there is (i hate to say this way) junk. You need to get rid of that and go with a one of our DIY filters.

Snails and sucker fish will do nothing for green water, so please run as fast as you can from those giving you that advice.

Help us with some answers to these questions:

1. When did you start up the pond this spring.
2. Do you have fish or any critters in this pond
3. How often do you do water changes (before this incident when you were getting advice to do a 50% water change)?
4. What exactly is in that bio filter? Please help us understand how it works and it's contents. Why is it IN the water?

Ok, all good questions that I should have posted, sorry.
Will get rid of the "junk" filter ASAP. Figured it was no good when we keep having the same problem every year with no end in sight.

1.) We have been running our pump year round, as for startup, I’m not for sure. In March we cleaned out the bottom of the pond, clearing leafs that were in it and the muck out. Added some good bacteria stuff the nursery sold us, and nothing but green. They advised us 2 scoops twice a week.

2.) Yes about 8 Koi in the bond and some snails (snails per the pet store owner, he said we needed them)
3.) On the 50% water changes we got conflicting advice on that. The pest store where we buy our Koi told us to do 50% water changes and the owner of the nursery told us never to do them. So I'm at a real loss on what to do now!
4.) The bio filter is only a 5gallon currently. The "junk" one has bio balls in the bottom of it, and 2 types of filter material, course/fine. Really there is no reason it's in the water, just put it there to get it out of the way and make it not as noticeable from the street, If you are married u will understand. LOL. The 5gallon filter was added about 3 days before the pictures were taken. I added the PVC to it the day of the picture to attempt to get more biological growth to take place.

Here are pics of what my 5 gallon bio filter consist of.

We are running a 500gph pump in the pond, with an additional fountain pump (unsure of the gph on that one). Being that it's a 500 gallon pond, water changes every hour. We are just stuck in green water every year. The only time we can see the fish is when we feed them. I can only imagine that the fish are upset about the water condition.

The aerobic or "good" bacteria colonizes on solid surfaces its not free floating.. If you add bacteria turn your u.v off for a couple hours when adding. ONCE YOUR WATER CLEARS YOU CAN KILL THE U.V

Ok, that info is all helpful.

First off, if I were you, I would never return to that pet store again, as that person has no idea what he's talking about. He's trying to treat a pond like a tank in a house, and they are two very different things. RUN, don't walk away from that place.

Second, you do not NEED snails in a pond. In fact, I hate mollusks in a pond because if a snail dies, it can take a long time to figure that out and the corpse is rotting and polluting your pond.

You NEED to do a 20% water change in your pond EVERY week--particularly in a small pond such as yours. It is much harder to control water quality in a small body of water versus a bigger one. I would start with a 50% water change right off the bat since you have murky water at the moment, and then do 20% every week thereafter.

You have too many koi in a 500 g. pond. Not even 1 koi belongs in 500 gallons in my opinion. Yes, they are little fingerlings when you buy them, but these are animals that grow to 18-24". A pond of your size is a watergarden and should have a few comet goldfish if you like.

In your third picture, why is your basket upside down. Are you doing that just to keep your media down? I think you do not have enough media in that bucket, first of all. You need much more stuff in there. It should be filled nearly to the top. Why is the bucket in the water and not out of the water. You are taking up valuable real estate in the pond with that thing in there. It also looks unattractive (I am married, and the wife, so I can fully relate to what you are saying! LOL!). Let's make things more attractive.

A UV will work, you don't need a very big one for your pond. You can probably pick up an 8-10 watt one on ebay pretty cheaply. However, if you aren't doing water changes and keeping up water quality, no UV.

You need to solve several problems:

1) you need to cover your pond with a net in the winter so you don't get leaves decaying in the pond and therefore, litle to no muck
2) you need to change up your 5 gallon filter and get it out of the pond
3) as hard as it is, i would rehome some of your koi. you have too many for pond.
4) Get rid of that crap filter, and perhaps do a 10 gallon bio/mechanical filter in one. I will give you some links for ideas. Hide it well, so the wife approves.
5) you can get a UV once all these other componenets are in place.

First off thanks for all the valuable information, i will work the list of thing I need to do. I need all the help I can get. I so new at this it’s not even funny.

The upside down basket was a cheap way to keep the media from the bottom of the bucket, the PVC is on top and around the sides of the bucket, and then the scrub pads are on top of the PVC almost to the outlet to return water to the pond. It's filled almost to the top. Pictures don't tell a thousand words! LOL, I can see why you think the media would be under the basket, but I can assure you the media is on top of it.

Yes our Koi are little things currently, I am in the process of digging a 1500-3000 gallon pond to move the Koi into it.

I look forward to the links, and all the help I can get.

Its been my experience that ponds go green every spring,we do a 30% water change ,make sure there are plenty of horwort and lilies that will give good coverage once they get there leaves, and nature will take care of the green.
One day you'll go to look at the pond and it will be clear.

Will do, thanks for the info. Will put it all to good use!

Depending on how fast you can your other pond built, you may just want to leave well enough alone with the current pond and just build a filter for the new pond. Are you planning on keeping the old pond, too?

Kinda torn between scrapping the old pond and keeping it. It has always been mostly green. I'm unsure about keeping it, scrapping it, adding onto it, or what. Thats a very good question.

Monday A.M. will be trying to get a couple 55 gallon drums and start building.
