goldfish cotton like lumps on body

Hi chaps

I've been loving my pond lately' and especially since i upgraded my filter system i now have what i thought was great clear water conditions... but think I've been guilty of overfeeding .....

Today i was looking and admiring the fish in the pond when i noticed 1 of the bigger goldfish looked a little worse for wear his fins look a bit scruffy and on his body he seems to have a cotton type wool /slime on parts of his body.

I've since noticed 3 fish with not as bad but simmiler symptoms' so have caught the 3 and put them in quarantine for a while.

I have also done a partial water change in the pond.

Have you guys any ideas heres a few pictures .

You have a very nice pond. I can't really see well enough in these pictures, so hopefully someone else will have an idea.

If possible, see if you can get a more clear [and better focused] picture. I know it's not easy to get good pic, but it's really hard to tell anything here -- except that the fish do look kinda beat up.

Is it possible that your fish were spawning? I understand that they can beat themselves up pretty bad. And one of the fish in your pic looks like it could be a female.....

Honestly, I can't see anything that sounds like what you're describing, other than maybe some missing scales.

But I do think you were wise to QT them -- if there was any doubt -- and to do a water change. Let's wait for some more of our members to chime in and see what they say.

Daz what you have here is Fungal disease , there are a number of fungi which are natural and is present nearly all bodies of water normally they dont prove a problem to healthy goldfish or koi and these fungi are part of a ballanced ecosytem.
They normally live on decomposing or decaying matter .
Fungi normally attack damaged areas of skin most possibly caused by mating and as such is a secondry infection ,
They will also expoilt damge cause to the skin of your fish that has been caused after a parasitic infection ......
The fungi can be numerous colours from white through brown to grey or blackif left untreated it can threaten the survival of your fish as the fungi will start to infect your fish internally.
Parasite attack , poor water conditions, poor nutrition or spawning are the normal routes for fungi to attack your fish so perhaps your overfeeding has tipped the ballence , have they recently mated Daz ?
When treating fungi you must identify the cause believe you me if you dont Daz you've lost the battle to treat this before you start as it will keep on coming back again my friend
So go through everything last water change , check water perameters check for damage on the fish .
A good off the shelf anti fungal treatment should clear this up for you , make sure all the infected fish are out of the pond and in QT because fungi spread by spores so its best to have all the infected fish in the one area and not in the pond.
Keep me posted as to how your going with these fish .

Hi guys i have an update !!!!!!

1 of the 3 fish didn't make it through the night SAD the other 2 seem ok

On the flip side

I have been to my local aquatic shop and they tested the water and said it was perfect the actually commented on how crystal it is although i did complete a partial water change yesterday.

I have also added some Blagdon Anti Fungus Bacteria to the whole pond and the fish that are in quarantine.

There is a silver lining here guys... i checked all fish this morning at 530am but unfortunately my son told me at 8am that the fish was floating.
I examined the fish at around 4pm when i was home from work and when i looked closely at the dead fish i could see the bum end was very much open as if the fish were about to lay its eggs. not sure if i done the right thing but i expressed the gold fish by gently massaging its belly and lots of eggs came out which i placed in my pond. so it wasnt in vain.

The problem you may have there daz is that fungi also love to attach themselves to fish eggs however the Blagdon anti fungal treatment may work in your favour with these eggs .
The fish in QT if your up to it get them out after anethatizing them and with q tips you could gently scrape it off .
We use MS222 for anethetic but at a push you could use 10 ml oil of cloves to 2 gallons imperial of water , if the fish refuses to go under add another 10 ml once you've treated them place back into the treated water of your QT tank .

Oh Sorry mate I thought you knew how to , no fear I did an article that takes a person through the various stages of anethatizing a fish , if you can get MS222 try oil of cloves available from Health food stores then follow as instructed :-

Many others use the oil of cloves approach to anethatizng their fish once under you have about 5 minutes before your fish needs to go back into water to clear up the fungi .
If I recall correctly @Mmathis, @bettasngoldfish have both anethatized their own fish going off the instructions
