...They are fish the whole time... They arent like frogs or butterflies. Are you asking when a fry is considered a fingerling? Or maybe when do large koi realize they are fish and not insects?

Fry is a term that has been used for a long time to refer to baby fish. In some cases, dealing with fry is quite different than dealing with adults or semi adults.
A fry is a fish, but a fish isn't a fry. Kind of like when do you not call a child a baby anymore. My kids are in there upper teens and lower 20's, They are still my babies but I don't dare call them that in public, LOL

So is it the size of the fish compared to the adults that determines it is not a fry anymore or is a length of time (ie: the fry becomes a fish after 3 months)?

We had some guests over and I was showing them my fry, a term they hadn't associated with fish. One person says " I guess thats where the term small fry comes from". I said I wasn't sure but it could be.:D
