At the end of June our daughter-in-law gave us two tadpoles that she had
in her classroom. We put them in our biological pond...Here is one just snapped this morning.
This is the first time we saw him.

Can anyone identify this little guy?

Hey guys, this little guy is only two inches in size...it's been three months since we tossed the tadpole
into the pond, shouldn't he be bigger by now if he was a bullfrog?

Here is our bullfrog 'Budweiser' just after he ate a bird. He was so fat and stuffed that I could roll him around
with a stick. I just picked him up for the photo, After that the head groundskeeper took him to
his fishing hole! He didn't want Budweiser eating his fish, and I didn't want him eating our birds!

this was taken in 2003...with my fugi 1.5 mega pixel camera.

now this is a Bullfrog!

The lack of a ridge running back from the eye identifies it as a bullfrog. John

Ok, I only doubted he was a bullfrog cause he is so small, I guess they grow more slowly
then I thought.
Since 2003, after we relocated Budweiser, we haven't had a bullfrog, or any other frog
take up residence in our pond.

We have lots of them in our area, we just think our large koi scare them away.

Our fearless koi!

2" does kind of sound small but I have to keep in mind Northern Versus Southern. Here the bullfrogs emerge with stubby tails at about 2-3" but grow to be about 6" in the first year. (sitting measurement) Bullfrog tadpoles here stay tadpoles for about a full year before they change into frogs. I've seen pics from some of the northern folks and the green frog and the bullfrog do look a lot alike. In most cases down here I'm safe with a bullfrog until it reaches about three years old (about the size of a Mans spread out hand). , Then I start worrying about them attacking smaller fish. But we don't have green frogs here, so comparing the two side by side is almost impossible for me.

Larkin; Most frogs have a raised ridge that runs over the eye and back along the body. On a bullfrog that ridge goes around the eye, then it curves downward around the tympanum (ear drum) and ends at the top of the foreleg. And F.W.I.W., you can tell a male by the larger tympanum. The green frog should be in your area, as they go right down to the Everglades. John

BullFrog, green frog, other? I originally thought this was a female Bullfrog, however, it's still only about 4" long and it's sound is quite different than the local bull frogs. has a sharp bark not a deep croak. No green at all, only brown and a creamier color brown that our bullfrogs, Bullfrogs here are olive green and most have brighter green faces that vary in color greatly. It's very tame and I raised it from some tadpoles I got from a local pet store and they didn't know what kind of tadpoles they were, BUT they were close to the size of bullfrog tadpoles when I got them.

From the picture I'd say it's a male bullfrog, since the Tympanum is larger than the eye. It's definitely not a green, but apparently cross-breeds are found from time to time. John
