I hav ea good friend with a large farm pond with too many koi in it to count. Are koi strong enough to survive fishing them out with a hook and bait? I know no other way than that. Any advise out there to catch some of these koi. Most are in the 12 - 15" range.

They have very fragile mouths, hooks can rip the lips very badly, plus they are very finicky about taking any type of bait. The best way to remove some is with a Seine net.

This pond is about 1/2 acre in size. I would need some of those amazon fisherman with a big net. I figured the mouths would be fragile, but the owner is at his wits end and wants them out. I don't think he or i have enough time to rid the pond of koi by fishing them out.

1/2 acre isn't too bad, but it would probably take two or three people to work that big of a net, Someone with catfish or talapia farm experience would be able to remove most in just a few hours, I've seen where some have been fished out of the wild where they have accidently gotten released but for the most part they are very hard to catch that way and can easily be hurt bad.
If they come up to feed in a group it might be possible to net some out but with them getting to that size they are going to spook easy and your not going to get but just a few chances at it at best.

Yep agree with fishin, a net would be the best way. Are you trying to move them or purge?

About 15 years ago a friend of mine wanted to give me some of his fish. His pond was so large and deep that netting was out of the question. He used a small trouble hook and bread. They were hitting it as fast as he could cast. None were injured as he was carefull to use barbless hooks and keep only a steady pressure on reeling them in.
