Hello,

I hope you can help. I have a 2 x 1 x 0.5 meter pond in my garden, with 10 goldfish. 3 of those fish were bought a couple of months ago, and one of them has a swelling on one side:

The pic isn't great, but it was hard to take a photo.

I've moved the fish to a bucket and added some Tetra medifin to it, in case it was sick.

Can anyone help me diagnose the problem so I can help my fish? It's only swollen on one side, the scales look normal and there's nothing else wrong with the fish that I can see. It's a little inactive at the moment, but probably as it's in a bucket all by itself.

The other 9 fish in the pond look happy and normal :).

Thank you for your help.

I haven't fed it since moving it to the bucket a couple of days ago. I think it was feeding ok until then.

There's a very slight kink in the spine, perhaps. It's nothing huge though. The bulge looks a little smaller in the photo than it does in reality, as it's somewhat hidden. It's the best photo I can get unfortunately.

I've tested the water with a 7-in-1 kit and all of the parameters came back with normal values (same as always).

Thank you for your help Meyer Jordan. Having read up on scoliosis, I think it's probably not that as there's a definite bulge under the scales towards the rear, it's just hard to show in the photo.

So, if I feed it peas for a few days and it doesn't improve, I can assume it's a tumor and it'll be safe to put back in the pond?

Give it at least a week if you can maintain water quality and an acceptable oxygen level in the bucket.
Did this just suddenly develop with this fish?

Yes, I can't remember seeing the bulge there a couple of weeks ago. I pour water from the pond in to the bucket every day to oxygenate it.

It's been a while since you posted here, but I am hoping to see if you had any luck with your fish? I just found mine having the same sort of lump but on the other side. I'm treating it with salt baths and an internal anti-bacterial treatment.

Since we haven’t heard from that member in over 3 years, I doubt that you will get an answer. Unfortunately, that happens a lot and we never know the end of the story.

And since you are new here, you might want to start a new thread to discuss and share the problem you are having. That way, it will be easier for you and other members to follow along without getting bogged down and lost in an old thread. After all, everyone’s problems are unique, even if similar.
