I have a Aquascape BioFalls, pump and skimmer. When cleaning out the skimmer yesterday, I notice three small shubunkins that had somehow managed to get caught in the skimmer. Does this happen frequently?

It can if some fish are smaller. But, as you have seen, they kinda swim around in there until you check and and save 'em. In most skimmers, there is a partition with a foam sponge or something between that and any pump that might be inside your skimmer.

I actually had the same problem. I extended the plant shelf so it went under the skimmer, then built up the smaller rocks so that the fish didn't want to swim over them. There is still enough flow to catch the floating stuff, but the fish don't want to risk it. It worked like a charm.

My Koi jump over rocks just to see whats on the other side. Skimmers kill fish if you don't rescue them in time.

I found my missing fantail in my skimmer after a week of noticing him gone. I had looked in there initially but apparently not good enough the first time. I assumed a predator had got him. It happens too often for me:(
