I only have goldfish in my pond, but they are nice, and am wondering about food. Most of the catalogs have koi food advertised. Is it ok to feed this to goldies? Do you have a favorite brand? What about those that advertise immune boosting, and other "medical" type things?

I have koi and a few wakins and they all eat the same food. Try Hai Feng it's pretty cheap and a good food.

I'm feeding my shubunkins the 'TetraPond Spring & Fall Diet' (floating soft sticks) that I purchased at PetSmart. It has wheatgerm in it that helps with early spring digestibility, but I don't agree with the recomended feeding temps on the package. It says to use the 'Spring & Fall Diet' in temps from 39*F to 50*F, and then all other TetraPond products from 50*F and above. I don't even start feeding until the pond water temps are consistantly above 50*F. Many of the seasoned koi and gold fish pond people here will agree.

I have shubunkins simply because I don't have the room for koi and they are typically as colorfull as koi. I don't have all the answers to you questions, but you will get a lot of help at this forum.

I would never feed below 50.
My pond temps stays about 54 through the winter so I feed twice a week.

Just out of curiousity, where in the NW are you? I keep my pond open in the winter, but I use a smll pond heater that for the last two winters kept the water temp just above freezing even on those nights where the temp was down in the teens.

I have a son and daughter in law living in Molalla. OR. I tried talking them into a starter pond in their back yard.

I've been through Roseburg several times in life. Nice country side all through that area. Ground is really rocky. How did you dig a hole for your pond?

I see that 'Cascade Pond Supply' is on Sable Dr in Roseburg. I will have to stop in next time I'm your neck of the woods.

OK, I can only imagine how many people are going to yell at me for this but..... I feed my KOI dry cat food. I have been doing it for 10 years, their colors are vibrant, they have grown imensely, and it is soooooo much cheaper. OK everone, let the finger wagging begin ; )

This does not surprise me. I grew up on the Missouri River. The carp hung out where the sewage discharged into the river (we are talking the 50's) and they were all huge. We could stand on the bluffs over the river and watch them in the shallows by the outlet.
