Hi,

I'm new, sort of. I'm seventeen, and my dad has had ponds for a long time (his current is about 1,500g I think?) and I even built one with a little home depot shell when I was nine and entered a pond and garden contest, placing third (I think it was just because I was cute though!).

Anyways, I'm looking to dig one out with a liner now at a friends house, since my backyard floods and my fish always ended up swimming in my lawn. This is the design I was thinking about. I'm not exactly sure on measurements yet, but I'm thinking 6'x5'x4' (deepest part). What size liner should I buy, and where do you suggest buying from? I'm looking at a $200 budget obo (pump, liner, test kits etc).

The waterfall will literally be INSIDE the pond liner, just a pile of rocks with the return water from the filter pump. I had a problem with the waterfall leaking last time, and I don't want to deal with that again so I figured that would be the easiest solution. Behind the pile of rocks, there will be a little area where the fish can go to hide from predators (we have lots of blue herons). That will be totally covered up with a slab of cement or something, hidden by the waterfall.

The filter part is pretty basic, and will also be covered up by a slab with a fern or something on top to hide it. A net in front will catch any large particles, like leaves and behind that will be the pump, covered in a round sponge to catch some smaller particles. I have a TON of activated carbon here at home for my saltwater tanks, and I was wondering if that would be beneficial to the pond at all or not?

I would suggest you don't buy your liner until you do your dig, or if you do make sure you don't dig bigger than your liner. Check on harbor freight for cheap pumps that some have used with success.

What I'm afraid of about buying the liner after is that its definitely the time for rain right now, and I'd have to wait for the liner I order to get shipped to the house. What if it rains while the hole is there and it fills with mud and water? I wanted to dig and line all in the same day. >.>'

and thanks, will do!

You can do that, (it took me a month to dig mine lol) even if it rains the water will go away. Just make sure you keep your hole size to the liner size.

Are you saying that on your friends property when you dig a deep hole it fills w/ water and stays full for quite awhile? If so you will need to make sure that your pond edges are higher than the ground level or rain will seep down under your liner and push it up off the bottom and that is not a fun issue to deal with. There are several ways to deal w/ that if you have that problem on your property or your friends property actually. You just need to make sure the water runs away from your liner and not under. Others will chime in here w/ ideas for you I'm sure. Have lot's of fun doing this project and we will help you gladly

Honestly, I don't know if it'll stay filled with water or not. I know it does at my house, but like I said my house just floods straight out. lol I'm going to have like five other guys helping me dig this, so hopefully it'll go in in one day. I don't want to buy a sump pump (17 year old waitress budget), but I'll ask around and see if anyone has one I can borrow or something if that happens.
