Do the filters need to be out in the sun for the bacteria or can they be in darkness? I was thinking of moving them into my shed for Aesthetics only

many commercial storeboughts have lids, some dont...i would quess most of our DIY filters dont, but i do cover the waters surface in plants on mine...so insde your shed should not present a problem...my basement ponds filter gets minimal light of any kind as well.

I read its beneficial to have direct sunlight on the filter, but its not a must. In my case its a tradeoff with leaves (and pollen) falling in, but I still keep the lids off.
