I have a 300 gallon pond with one of those mechanical filters from lowes and a 210 gph pump in it. My water is really clear but there is gunk and sludge on the bottom of the pond no string algae just carpet algae also. Do I need better filteration to clean up the sludge and fish poop at the bottom of the pond?

If you don't have a bottom drain in your bond you will always have the muck till you physically take it out.

I have never had muck in the bottom of my lower pond where my submersible pumps are. I get leaves that I have to pick out but the bottom is always clean.
My upper pond has no 24/7 pumps since it is fed by the lower pond and it does get some muck. When I see it, I run the submersible that is there for the large waterfall and in a few hours, it is clean.
I can see grains of sand on the bottom, where they come from is a mystery to me.

You could buy a pond vacuum or use your shop vacuum to get the stuff out also.

Hey, DrDave, you know the Skippy guys seem to say that fish poop turns into a few grains of sand. Maybe they're right! :regular_waving_emot

They also say, right on their website, that 55 gallon drums don't work as bio filters. Not too bright are they?

Gave me some useful intelligence, though. I was disappointed when I contacted them and they discouraged me from adding venturis to my filter. I think the venturis in there make a lot more happen.

Okiee: I have a 300 gal pond in CT with a box type filter and a 210gph pump. It turned out to be a big failure. My ammonia went sky high the filter needed cleaning all the time. This happens all of a sudden with no warning ( one day fine the next day sky high) I had to build a 30gal barrel type filter and change to a 500gph pump. All is fine now. The best thing you can do now is do water changes every week. About 15 to 20% This will keep the ammonia from doing this for sure. RDK

Three small fish in 300 gallons is not the problem. You need to clean the bottom and get better circulation so this does not occur again. Do you have rocks on the bottom?

You must have a dead spot for it to collect
I agree with more circulation either with water or air will help

That was in the past. I threw everything out. I now have a 30 gal barrel filter with a powerful 500gph pump 2" hoses. Float valve- I now have 6 happy goldfish one 13" long the other 8" the others are all 6" long. My bottom is clean, water is clear, water now test perfect. Pond is fully covered. No leaves, no animals eating the fish. Fish love the water change. RDK
