Great filter. I would use everything except the rocks. Too hard to keep clean. Use 1/2" poly strapping instead. You can buy it on Ebay.

The black tubes are going to perform the same function as the strapping. No need to duplicate. They should be in the last or next to last if you are going to add a fines filter element.

i would do it like this
1-the brushes and a course mechanical filter material
2 finer mechanical filter material
3 PVC tubes
4 pillow stuffing for the fines. you can change this out when the water is clear with more Bio filter material.

Do not use the rocks for anything. throw them out.

i think jason has it right here. You could do a second layer of sponges instead of those rocks (or matala mats). But Jaon's advice is sound.

I love those UK multi-chamber filters. Wish we had those readily available in the USA.

if your going to use the rocks try it like this

1- brushes
2-blue sponge
3-poly tubes
4 - lava rocks

You want to keep the rocks as clean a possible. but there is so much better stuff around the house for bio filters. even the round plastic scrubbers from the kitchen sink. Of course new clean ones that have no soap or anything.
