There have been a number of fishy tales (pardon the pun) on GPF of late all with happy endings for the fish involved and PFK have come up with yet another happy ending to a fish operation .
This time it was to fit a prosthetic eye to an Aquariums fish to stop it being bullied by other fish , fitting the prosthetic eye fools its tank mates into thinking that its watching them :-

Keep the happy stories coming

Mind you j.w. wouldnt he bump into things still ,?
Surely after a while that would give the game away to the other fishes, wouldn't it ?

I think the reason they bug the ones w/only one eye is cause there is a hole there and fish like to pick in nooks and crannies looking for little goodies. That fish will do just fine I think and none of the others will bug him again. He still has his one good eye for seeing so he'll be able to get around.

That new Oranda does have a look like Charlie :)

Interesting story. Its a bit bizarre that so much money get put into things like this. But ..... I guess this vet gets to now say he put a fake eye in a fish, perhaps that will score him his next higher paying job.

So bullying is instinctive?....

That's scary.o_O

From the book on fish behavour I've read yes it is Mitch remember in the wild these fish wouldnt last 5 minutes because of being blind in one eye .
However in more confined spaces such as fish tank etc it can and does happen if you get things wrong .
I once had a chap come to me with a black more that had lost both his eyes to bullying from other faster moving goldfish .
Sadly our thoughts were that it swam at a slower pace which marked it out by other normal goldfish to be bullied because of it loosing both eyes,"the man should have taken this poor fish out from his set up after the first eye went but he said he thought it was some kind of disease" .
This is why in tropical and marine fish books you have the compatability write ups on the keeping of various species together in a happy together
Rather than make a mistake and add the wrong fish in and find it bullied and or eaten or vica versa .
