exterior pump

i have put a exterior pump on my pond. i have a self priming pump but can"t get it to prime....it is about a foot to 18" above the pond surface. what am i doing wrong?

welcome .I know there are few on here that have them but if you have the model and brand you can go online to trouble shoot it .I know even you tube has videos .I have submerged pump for just that reason .Could the line going in be plugged or the impellor be stuck

I have exterior pumps, one I had to put in a check valve, the other was self priming it did fine. The one I am using now is sort of self priming. I lowered the pump to ground level, have not had an issue since, no check valve.

Did it use to work? or is it a new pump?
