A clean and clear pond dosnt always come easy it takes detication and a hobbiest who enjoys koi and the sound and apperence of a water feature in thier own backyard so I decided to make an artical with my knowledge on how to keep a clean and heathly pond that is nessasary for the health of you koi (or Goldfish).

The bigger the pond the better. Why? well a bigger pond is easier to maintain it is also less prone to temperature fluctuations and plus you can have more koi.

The next step to a heatlhy pond is your filtration unit, nobody has the exact same setup everbody has a somthing that works for them , most consist of a skimmer, waterfall filter/ biological filter, pressureized filter or the DIY filter which is usually the most common. Some more advanced koi hobbiests have bottom drains running to settlement chambers bead filters clarifiers sid filters and all sorts of elaberate filtration, the list goes on forever and im not going to sit and talk about them for the next 12 hours.

Skimmers are a great filtration tool to have for your pond because the majority of debrius that end up in your pond land on the surface, a skimmer clears all this organic matter off the surface keeping it from falling to the bottom and decomposing causing poor water quality. a skimmer can be purchased or you can make you own. I have found this setup to be my favorite
. a pump will be required to run your skimmer and afterwords the water will head to you filtration unit.

weather you make it or buy it you will need it, Its a filter. Most filters have a sieries of pads to filter fine material followed by biological filter media. this gets ride of amonia which can cause a pond poor water quality. you can also make a filter. here is a decent DIY filter
there are also many others out there

Benifical bacteria is your friend you need this in your pond to keep it clean ad clear. The more you have the much better of you will be. To get the most bacteria you need allot of surface area for it to grow thus rocking in you pond and adding gravel to it helps allot by tripling the amount of surface area which it can grow. also add as many bags of lava rock as you possibly can to your filter to add bacteria, this rock is very porus and has a ton of surface area. This will allow bacteria to colinize keeping the pond clear and will remove amonia ect. You can also add Benafical bacteria to your pond this will break down organic material keeping the pond clear heres a great video explaining the importance of adding bacteria to the pond

Plants, having allot of plants will help keep the pond clear. plants will remove most of the nutrients from the water leaving little for alage so it cant reproduce. It will also break down materials that have settled to the bottom of the pond. By haveing lilies or surface covering plants like hyacinth will keep the pond shaded and less prone to alage

to all of you ponders out there I hope this will help you out with clean and clear water
