As you know here in Plymouth weve been having extremes in temperature this year,as such this year has seen our pond at its hottest ever with 24.8c at its highest.
Then out of the blue weve had hot, cold, hot cold repeatedly in quick sucsesion plus thanx to tropical storm bertha huge amounts of rain which have been adding to the stress of our koi
Its only after Bertha that we started to see signs of parasites on our koi .
So out came the microscope and we caught Tiny one of our oldest koi at 27 years old it was Tiny who originally tipped us the nod that things werent quite right and when we went out to do the scrape it was tiny we caught to scrape, you cold say he was typhoid Mary so to speak (remember how I said many threads ago to learn to read your fish) ?
Costia White spot and skin flukes came up on the microscope though not in equal numbers I was mortified at the results
Whitespot was the agressor on our slide it being seen in high numbers but the others could quite easily have taken advantage due to the weakend state had I not noticed something wrong.
Three treatments of Formalin at 75 ml and Malachite at 60ml combined should clear the lot but it will be a protracted battle to bag em all
How it all works , well the formalin strips the mucus allowing the adults to be killed off whilst the combined treatment takes care of the juveniles but then we have to make sure the next generation are knocked out in its juvelile form and then as a final treatment do it again each with a five day gap between treatments which should return things to normal
How can a couple who help out with health issues have so many things in the pond at once ?..simply because all ponds and fish have parasites but at the best of times when they arent stressed out the numbers are down and they are kept in check, its only when something happens to upset the ballance that they start to get out of control.
So if you have been having the types of weather weve been having of late keep a very close eye on your fish if you see anything untowards and you know how to do a scrape plus have a microscope do the right thing take that scrape it may just save a life

It turns out that where we live was hit with nearly its entire average rainfall in just the first half of the month figures just out show there has been 86.1mm (3.4") so far as the remains of hurricane Bertha swept the country sadly this has had the effects of Northerly winds being drawn down into the UK lowering our temperature which is most noticable at night but with an average of sunshine levels just over 77.8 hours .
Last night saw a temperature of 6c which is well bellow that of normal as it should be around about 12c.
This morning we see a 10c difference from last night which makes far colder than normal for this tme of year so as you can see weve been caught between the devil and the deep blue sea this month plus next week it gets to be colder again due to more notherly winds.

Jesus went out to check on the patients this morning and weve lost a total of 2.5c over the last 24 hours .
All are doing well and taking an interest in their suroundings again they are less stressed out than before and they are taking pelleyed foods again , we are due another cold night tonight then hopefully things will clear up again with a high coming up from the Atlantic ocean which means temperatures will go up again for a few more days .
This might all change it apears thanx to increased sysmic readings that there is a volcano in Iceland that is getting reaady to blow its top so that may put the kynosh on things

Yet another drop in temerature last night , reported on the Local weather station as being most un seasonal and a full 6c lower than we are supposed to be seeing at this time of year howver bright and sunny today , the volcano continues to make loud rumblings so watch this space .
The koi continue to respond very well to their treatment and to look at them you would think there had been nothing wrong with them but this is only part way through the treatment we have to eliminate the next juvinile stages to be out of the woods .

Well thats the second treatment in the pond done.
The koi have all responded beautifully well to it and are back to their usual selves again and wolfing doown their feeds,
However what is a continuded worry is the sudden un seasonable drop in temperature, it was reported as low as 3c here in Devon last night then with average temperatures during the day time but again lower than normal .
Still no news on the Volcano in Iceland but if it kicks off well soon know about it

Pond temperatures continue to go up and down wildly we were back up to 15c today from a low of 13c again with unseasonable temeratures , I dont want to have to do this but I may have to get Jeff to put the covers back on th pond prematurely
