Electronic pond fence

Does anyone know if electric pond fences are good at keeping raccoons out of the pond? I hate to spend more money on a device that doesn't work.

Here are the specs:
This kit includes a quality .5 joule AC powered Spitfire V low-impedance, UL listed, 5 mile energizer, 4 - line tighteners, 1 - 250 ft. spool aluminum wire (sufficient for 62.5 ft. of fencing), 1 - 23" copper-coated ground rod with clamp, 10 - "Pond Guardian" arm, base and spike assemblies, electric fence 2-wire warning sign, electric fence tester, and installation manual.

I made mine for free. Of course mine is lethal and will kill the raccoon. Just use house AC and 2 wires threaded through wooden dowels. Place them where the raccoon is likely to enter or back out of the pond. When his butt hits the bare wires and his paws are in the water he is a goner, for good.

Make sure your pets, kids and so on are never in the yard when this is energized.

Raccoons will keep coming back unless you dispatch them.

I am looking more to just buzz them so they learn to stay away.
Do you have yours on an on/off switch or do you just unplug it?

Your thinking is flawed, buzzing them does nothing. The one I killed, got buzzed the night before and came back the next night to meet his death. I enjoyed 5 years with no problems until recently, time to build the fence again.

I just plugged mine in, but a switch could be used. I felt plugging in was safer since I could clearly see it was not energized when I let my cats out.

Until I took this step, years of growth and many fish were lost. I got tired of working for years, only to have a predator ruin it in 5 minutes.

Is there a resistor in the line? How did you rig it up that it doesn't short itself out?

I would think it is two bare wires, as long as they don't touch, it won't short.

I don't have problems with raccoons but instead have problems with Sonora green toads. At 3 AM a couple of nights ago, I had to go outside during a rainstorm and use a flashlight and net to find and catch a half dozen toads.

The toads were making so much noise that they were waking up my neighbors. They also weren't making a pleasant croaking sound. They sounded like cats in distress.

I killed the toads but made the mistake of mentioning this at a teachers' forum. The response was ... interesting. I was accused of not respecting the life cycle, of destroying habitats, and wreaking havoc on our ecosystem.

For toads, I think a board with parallel hot and nuetral wires about an inch apart, should make for a nice hotfoot. Stategically placed around the pond, it should eventually thin them out.

LOL....It's nice to know ya'll aren't a bunch of Tree hugging, "Humans Bad = Animals good", overboard environmental whackos. It's a racoon & some toads. Plenty more of those out there.

Just another reason to get a new gun.. I've taken out three this year with my hatsan sniper .25

That's pretty funny with the electric fence lol. So does the current travel through the raccoon and pond to the fish?
