Dividing Chinese Lobelia

I purchased 2 Chinese Lobelia plants and would like to divide them into 4. The folks at the pond store were hesitant to say "yes, no problem" so I'm putting it out here before I do anything to them. Suggestions???

If you just purchased them the odds are that they are not large enough to divide. Allow at lest one full season of growth.
