Herons! In my experience they won't attempt to take fish longer than 14" or so. I just chlorinated my two remaining 3 year old 16" koi and would like to buy a number of small ones - after applying the chloramine remover, of course....

Might somebody be able to provide a photographic example of the 'nylon fishing line' deterrent idea?

I don't have a photo, but I strung fishing line at 3 foot intervals 2 feet above my pond, and had a few herons land on our roof, but they never tried to get our fish. They would sit there, or on a neighbors roof and watch the pond, but never attempt to access it.

Lol I did that and the herons managed to still get in

Disclaimer my pond is large irregular, hard to run lines.

I finally put a wide weave net over it, about two feet above the water.

I found it is important to put it well over the pond. I did a low net near the surface and twice the heron just poked holes in mine.
