Hi all
I have a small garden pond 8Lx5Wx4D about 2weeks ago i had a bit of a disaster i suffered a hose breakage and as a result lost most of the water, i replaced it useing ordinary tap water, i had little choice i had lost 90% of my content, anyway i noticed today that the snails in the pond seem to be dying, i have pulled only 4-5 out but this seems alot to die at the same time, the goldfish seem to be okay(including the babies) any ideas?

erb, what do your water test read? Very possible that the tap water has high enough chlorine/other steralizer that would effect the snails and not the fish, But there is also the chance that the fish were also effected just not as bad. When having to fill like that first thing don't fill fast, drip fill or put a light spray of water when filling, this will help allow some of the chlorine to evapoate, second any time your filling more than 10% of the water always use a dechlorinator when adding water and add it very slowly. For now what is done is done, but you'll really need to monitor your water closely, if snails are dying then they can foul the water more and if the fish were effected they could have weakened immune systems which could react with the snails dying and then the fish start dying. make sure and monitor the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate very closely, since it's a new pond these are the most important things to watch. But also you will need to know the PH. PH that is high and has ammonia is more deadly than a pond that has a lower PH. if you'll post all your water parameter readings we can at least get a better look at what might be the next course of action. As for reading a book. well if that's the course that is needed, i recommend this one. http://www.amazon.co...38561908&sr=1-2 although not the best book on the market it's very affordable, has really good information that is proven reliable, and it is in a easy to use format so anyone from the novice to the experienced can use and understand. it also has some great landscaping ideas and a section of what to do in case of emergency section.

Snails can be pretty sensitive to water changes. Sorry about your hose breakage, agree with what fishin is saying.
