This will be the last time I buy Shubunkins from Petco... Not sure why but the last 8 Shubunkins I've bought from them have all died. Maybe they're not meant to be pond fish. Not sure why this guy died. He lived happily for 1-2 months. Maybe he overate?

Do you have anything like Water lettuce, Euphorbia or a cherry tree near your pond

Oh, so sorry! I, too, try to stay away from our PETCO, (and others), but if/when I do see a fish I can't live without.... Won't say I'll never buy from them, but will look over the entire tank, at all of the fish before I decide -- and QT is a given. One very nice Shubie I have came from WALLY-WORLD (heaven forbid!)

The obvious question -- did you QT him?

Were there any signs of injury or a wound? Or any indication at all of a problem, like was he acting any different prior to his death?

Bummer John :(
I'm sticking w/ Petsmart. So far most all of the shubbies I have bought from them have lived minus a couple. It's been a few years and they are still alive and kicking...............or swimming.

- Thanks for your kind words.
- I think it has to do with the fish type as I've bought koi and feeder fish from Petco and Petsmart who are totally OK. In fact, I've a feeder from Petco who is like double this guy's size I raised from minnow size.
- No water lettuce, Euphorbia or a cherry tree near the pond.
- I don't QT any of my fish. I never knew about that prior to coming to the forums and so never had a QT tank.
- No signs of stress or injury.

Sorry about your fish John. I have one fish from petco but it never grew much. I think they had it for a while before I bought it. I have some really nice goldfish fish I got from petsmart. They all have really long tails now. It's definitely worth it to pay a couple dollars more for their fish. I only paid $1.99 for my favorite shubunkin from them. It grew into a beauty.

Sorry for your loss. I never knew Petsmart and Petco had pond fish, as I've only bought from our local fish hatchery.....I'll have to take a peek next time I'm there.

We had an American pet store chain that came to the UK a while back now .
Before very long there were some really bad stories in the papers about them a cat drowned by one member of staff for scratching her, another killed a rabbit because it bit her, then there were the reports of sick and dyng pets from members of the public.
So in the end one of the TV channels did a fly on the wall documentary as to what was going on with this company and its employees, they uncovered a lack of in store training where supplied by decrepid dog and cat farms with dieased animals.
Fish that died in their tanks and were left to be eaten by their tank mates sick and diseased fish everything was wrong with this company .
"It's amazing just how much good documentaries are, the store changed around over night"!!!!!..... perhaps its time to do the same in the US ???

The anal fin is infected and the fish has it may well have had a bacterial infection of some sort that caused its demise
However I seriously doubt doubt it was parasitic infection or youd see signs of them on all your fish, John .
