I have a couple of questions after reading this mb. My first question is: what is a biological filter? Secondly I am wondering if, since the weather is finally getting warm, if I have to keep track of the temperature of the water and at what temp do I need to add cool water?

a biological filter is just what its called, biological!your pump sends water to the filter. bacteria colonize the media in the filter, feeding on the fish waste, decaying plant matter, and other debris...it removes ammonia, and toxins. ammonia by turning it into nitrates and then nitrites that can be used by plants for food. it basically completes the nitrification cycle. does mother natures job in a controlled enviroment.
