Coons?

Well for the most part they are opportunistic hunters. They look for a quick meal that comes close to them. And even while swimming I doubt they would be able to hunt and stay afloat from how they look in that video. LOL
But here is another consideration. Why take the chance of a Koi becoming dinner without the net? What if one of the more friendlier ones comes over thinking it is someone with food and becomes the food? And the net is a great deterent so that the Koi don't get spooked by a paw and claws swiping at them. If the Koi get spooked, it could take some time for them to feel safe coming back up to eat and visit.

I have seen a lot of coons swimming while i am out hunting they don't even do the dog paddle to good !!
You should be safe to keep it uncovered

I have coon prints on the side of pond every night, but no koi to worry about, and it is deep enough to protect fish when we decide to put some in.

Looks like they don't use the back legs at all, so would not be able to dive and grab fish, too busy swimming!
