To put it quite plainly they dont , if a fish is kept in a pond that is well looked after their colour should get deeper not fade, so either the fading is caused by the wrong water perameters perhaps or the fish is ill in some way or other .

Hmmm... our comet, once so orange he was almost red, changes to white, then white and orange and then back to orange all in one season. He's done that for three years now. I thought he was trying to trick the ladies into thinking he was a different fish! ;)

Thanks Dave,You can try changing it's diet and see what happens. I have read that certain food like shrimp will enhance a goldfish's color. I have had my fish change colors too. I once had a black one change to a real washed out salamender color that I hated and now it is a really gorgous white and orange spotted fish with orange lipstick on it's mouth.I have never really had one that had it's colors faded but I have a bunch that have turned to white. I think I have 7 or 8 white ones right now and I like them as much as the deeper colored ones.

There are alot of clour foods you can try experimenting with to keep their clour looking their best Dried silkworm pupae made by Kusuri are really good for brilliant whites as Keith said shrimp and prawn are good for the reds , you could try adding a slice of orange to their diet for extra vitamin Cm you could also try dried Mealy worm its cheaper to buy it from Garden centres where they sell it as bird food .
Most of our knowledge is koi related but colour enhanced koi foods help especially the specialised ones.

I put koi clay on all my foods to enhance color in all my fish ,but they always change color and I( have seen this happen more with the change in water temps. Like winter to spring to summer to fall it is never ending .Even Aggies color gets deeper in cooler water .I wanted to show pics but afraid it keeps saying error

Right. If the fish are seeing less light, you should be getting darker colors.
