what happens if I don’t use a check valve coming off my pump?

The pump will sit in a skimmer, water will travel about 25 feet to the bio falls box, not much elevation change, the falls box basically sits on ground level.

Is the check valve a must?

The only place I use a check valve is the line going to my bog so in the case of a power loss, the bog does not backflush. If you have an elevated filter, a check valve will keep the crud from going back into your pond with a power loss.

So if i understand, with no check valve a power loss would mean water in the falls box and the tubing to the falls box would come back to the skimmer and into the pond, which would push any crud in the skimmer back to the pond?

I don’t use a check valve either. I drilled a hole in the PVC tubing that pumps water into the Skippy. When/if my pump is off, the hole keeps the water levels in the Skippy from dropping. Same with the tubing going into my turtle-bog. So far, this has served me well. Not saying they’re not necessary......just that I don’t have one.
