Hi guys,
I have just a small barrel pond in my back yard…it gets lots of unwelcome guests in the form of cane toads! What if anything should I do about them as they seem to be taking over my yard…more this year than ever before…will they harm the goldfish?

Welcome. Afraid I can't help. No cane toads here.

Are you in Australia? Maybe someone from there will be along soon to answer your question.

Cane toads are a pest. I dont think they will hurt goldfishes, but tadpoles are extremly toxic, so if your gfs will try eat em, will die for sure.

from what I know, fish know better and will spit them back out, should the temptation happen. That's for American toads but perhaps it's all across all Toaddom?:p

In Australia Cane toads are destroying all local fauna, coz are introduced from Humans for their purposes, then they spread out w/o controls...they are killin almost all(dogs, cats, fishes, birds) water crocodiles too...tadpoles are high toxic, adults are poisonous like hell...animals will eat em, like normal toads, but can't resist to their poison and so die...
their introducing is one of the biggest faunistic problem in Australia, coz there aren't real natural fighters in Australia, and like all toads they make a lot of eggs....

wow, didn't know that! I'd say we get some for specialized Camp Patrols but I doubt Super Boss would be comfortable bringing her yorkies around, ya know? Hmm, maybe use a batch then as 'camp pest' deterrent patrols'??? Might even keep GB outta our honey supply!!:oops::rolleyes::cool::p

Hello and welcome! If they are an invasive, introduced species, maybe you can get help or information from a local wildlife group (thinking government-run, like Wildlife and Fisheries…..whatever you have where you live). They might have an approved eradication program.

Thanks for the assistance…my sons and I plan to collect them all up at night and humanely euthanise them…apparently there is a spray you can buy for it! We are in Qld Australia…and would like to encourage native blue tongue lizards which are currently competing for food with the toads in my yard!

Best way! Or can put em in fridge then freezer, so they go to forever sleep. Remember to use gloves and try don't squeeze em, poisonous glands are behind the eyes...

For your pond you can try to net all it, to avoid toads can reach it.

Good idea to humanely euthanize them; the refrigerator/ freezer method works. I suggest you put them in an old coffee tin with a lid, then into the fridge and freezer. We have cane toads here in Florida, US, they are invasive, are consuming our native frogs, and lethally poisoning pets. Good luck!

I saw a documentary a few years back about them. Serious problem and seems to just be getting worse.

What I didn't understand is that even though they are very poisonous, parents would give them to their children, even young ones, for pets.

Didn't realize they had made it to Florida. Sorry to hear that.

Hey @Natasha I'm also in Qld. Cane toads have also made themselves at home in my pond previously. Get yourself a bottle of Dettol and pour it into a spray bottle. One squirt will kill them. The spray you are thinking of has the exact same ingredient in it as Dettol. Once you spray the toad, you need to follow them so they don't go into the pond. Once they die, bag them and bin them. Saves putting them in your freezer, and if you time it well, you can do your hunt on bin night.

Toad trap…bucket with a flip lid, buried in the ground, place a small solar light on the handle to attract bugs.

If frogs get caught, they can climb out……toads don’t have the ability to climb out…..dispose as required.

It took us about 6 months, but we don’t see many toads around the yard anymore…and yup SEQ.
