Which is the cypress? Generally speaking, plants will not puncture liner. Some aggressive tree roots may try to work their way in from the outside of the pond, but plants already in the water are content where they are.

Your plants are actually Cyperus, more commonly called Papyrus, or Paper reed. Cypress is a tree, and would definitely cause problems. Cyprus is a country near Greece, and impossible to move into your pond! ;) Ah, the joys of the English language!!

Ah! Papyrus! You're safe with those. They will form a large root system given enough time but won't harm your liner.

I have some large sedges with roots up to 2-3 inches in diameter. Also I have a potted hat palm tree in my pond with roots that stick out from the container. Neither of them have ever bothered my liner

LOL, I thought you meant "cypress" as in the trees! Our state tree is the Bald Cypress. They have gnarly roots and projections called "knees."
