Can i build a bog that is to big for the pond? In the current build plan for the spring the bog by surface area would be able equal to the pond. By volume it would be 50% of the pond. If this has been answered previously, can someone point me to the thread. Thanks
short answer; no. You can never have too much filtering. Now, let's define filtering a bit. A bog is basically a biofilter, which means you're creating a lot of surface area via your pea gravel, for the good bacteria to colonize. This is a simple explanation if not wholly accurate. Now, plants, which CAN be part of this filter and is a good idea, take up the resultant nutrient created; nitrates. This is what algae primarily feeds on (like all plants). So, you MIGHT see your plants NOT thrive as if you had a more proportional one but there's ways to help that, should the plants be more important. Most don't have this problem as most bogs are probably under-sized. To help out your plants, IF this happens, you can just put in some fert tabs near any/all plants you're thinking are not doing well because you have more plants than nitrate production.
Too, some plants need less than others and you can pick that variety. But I'd not worry and just 'do it'! You can easily adjust later, you know, like BUYING MORE FISH! What a problem to have; 'my bog isn't getting enough to eat!'. You'll make many of us here envious, I promise you that!
