Bog building, also called upflow filter, eco filter, wetland filter
So, I am looking to add a bog to my pond which has been running, now that i really think about it, for probably 15 years. It is built with 14" deep plant shelves that are 3 to 4 foot wide. I have the large boulders with river rock behind and between for stability on this shelf. The nooks and crannies between some boulders do have plants so i guess it is already kind of like a bog within the pond. I have no real filter. just the skimmer pumping water to the header pond for the waterfall and stream. Now here come the questions, dumb ones I may add. Do I measure the pond surface area by the dugout dimensions of 25ish x 35ish at the widest points (it is an irregular shape) or the surface exposed inside of the boulders? With the plants and rock that I have in the pond, would i still need to have a bog 30% of the surface area, or could I go smaller? I was thinking 15'x5'x18", so would be only 10 to 15% of the ponds surface area. . The actual bog placement, hmmmmm. Where I would like it, is on the end of the pond in the first picture. The stumbling blocks for installing there would be the skimmer, the two 2" pvc pipe going up the berm to the header pond, and the overflow pipe. I am thinking having pipe buried under a few ton of pea gravel isn't the best option. The second picture shows where is would probably make more sense but that is the easy way to the header pond and I wander up there all the time and I don't really want it there. Any ideas how i could make my preferred placement work or should I just go the easy route and build it on the waterfall end? I have about 15 inches of liner overhang of the EPDM liner of the original pond. I am thinking of using RPE for the bog as it is strong and much lighter than the rubber. I am not getting any younger and the lighter weight will make it easier to deal with. Would I need to joint these somehow? How far over the original liner would the RPE need to overhang if it was above the surface level of the pond? What is the best placement for the pump? Bottom or on a plant shelf. How many GPH would I need? Can the pea gravel be placed directly over the PVC pipe? I have looked at so many of the comments in this thread that it is kind of overwhelming. I don't want complicated or expensive and after 15 years maybe it isn't needed but looking at the normal green spring pond waterm I am thinking it won't hurt either. Sorry for the rambling post of dumb questions. Out to work on the pond now.
