I have a buddy that is moving to a new house and has asked if I would hold his fish until he gets moved in and a new pond built. He has 8 fish from 3 inches to I believe 16". Looking for some advise on how we can move these fish, without harming them. I currently only have 2 fish one about 6" and the other is 3".

How far are they being moved?

I have moved fish in five gallon buckets. Filled 1/2 to 3/4 of the way with tank/pond water and using a cover over the top ( so no accidental jumping out of bucket)

I also used a battery operated aerator which I got at Wal-Mart in the fishing section (cheaper than pet store)

That's not bad, you probably don't even need the aerator then.

What are you doing with the fish once you get them home? Do you have some type of temporary holding tank?

Eventually put them in my pond. I might end up keeping a few of them as he is only really interested in keeping his 2 big ones. As for a holding tank, other then some rubber made bins, that's all I have.

Double plastic bag your fish one bag inside of the other.
Then quater fill the bags enough to cover the fish twist the top of the inner bag then bend over the top and secure wih a elastic band , then do the same with the outer bag making sure you have forced some air down into the bags before securing.
Black refuse sack these and simply tie off the top.
The black bag calms the fish safe for the 10 minute journey to your own home then simply float the bags for 30 minutes until the temperature has equalized .
This is the way we transport our koi too and from shows safely and without incident .

I agree with Dave, I've heard of stories of fish being banged to death in hard carries - like bins. I suppose 10 mins is a short ride though.

Keep is updated and pictures if you get any.

I was thinking about bags, I have all different sized polybags at work. He just listed the house so we still have some time. I read its best to do a few fish at a time so that the bio has enough time to regulate to the new fish load.
