Black Spots on Pebbles - Curiosity Question

I have a very small new garden pond - in situ since March/April. I have no plans for fish. Was excited to see newts in spring and early summer, and quite a few baby newts still seem to inhabit the pond. I also have many pond snails. I did have blanket weed issues until about a month ago, but have managed to eradicate this to just the extremes at the moment. But I am curious about black spots that have appeared on the pebbles on the bottom of the pond. On close examination, they appear to be very dark green algae (?) . Curiosity question only - but are they (a) some sort of algae?, (b) something to do with the newts ? (c) Something to do with the snails? (d) something to do with the blanket weed ? (e) Something else altogether?
