I have a Bio filter and a Bog on my pond. My pond is around 1500 gal. They are on opposite ends. I want to get rid of the Bio and do a Bog on that end. Does anyone filter their ponds with just a Bog ?

I have filtered a small 1500 gallon pond with bogs only. I quite like it other than the yearly clean out of the bogs. Hindsight tells me when I do it again to put a bottom drain in the bogs to make it easy to flush them out instead of taking all the media out of them to clean them.
I do plan on doing a very large bog to add to the filtration for my 3 - 4,000 gallon koi pond. It will be 16' X 4' X 3' but that project won't happen until next spring. It will have 3 bottom drains that will be directed to my flower beds for easy flushing every fall.

The bog, we made it out of a barrel. We put a bottom drain on it. Yea, it is a pain to take everything out and clean it. I just didn't know if it would filter a pond as good as a Bio.

Personally, I would not eliminate bio filtration for a bog only. I would do both, but would not take away bio just for a bog.

What does your bio filtration look like. Help us understand your system. What issues are you having that you are looking to get rid of bio? Most people want to add more bio, not take any away.

I just don't like the look of it. I'm not having any issues with it. I like the look of the bog better. I didn't know if anyone ever filtered their pond on a bog only. My pond is sorta split. There is the original pond, it's kind of round and 2 foot deep. I wanted bigger, so we dug beside it. That side is twice the size of the original plus it's 3 feet deep. We left the wall between them, took it down 9 inches so the fish can go back and forth. The Bio filters the big side, the bog filters the small side.

Why don't you post some pictures for us. Sometimes, it is just a matter of hiding/disguising filtration behind shrubs, ornamental grasses, waterfalls or rocks. We might be able to give you some ideas.

If you add a bog you will want to filter the solids out before or it will get nasty quick. Been there. I am using river rock and not dirt. For dirt it may be a different story. My bog is fed by my bio filter and I am growng quite abit in there without solids, just the nuts from the fish. But koikeepr is right keep the bio just hide it.

Everytime I tell my wife about pond plans her first response it "Will it be hidden?" LOL All my stuff is out in the open untill I am satisfied with the results. Reason being, I keep improving my system.

Yep, Us ladies don't want to see a mess of piping, filter boxes and such out there. If it can be hidden or put on the side of the house somehow, I'll give it a whirl.

In my bog, I use river rock, lava rock than pea gravel to hold the plants. The bio is pretty well hid, it's just a pain to lift off the slate, clean out all the mats, rinse the bio balls, suck the nasty water out than put it all back in again. The bog is so much easier to maintain.

No, it's not back flushable. We weren't thinking about that when we put it in. The pic is on page 1 of this thread. But, even it it was, wouldn't you still have to take the mats and bio balls out to clean them ? When we did the bog, we put a drain on it.
