Hi Jenn,

I have one 10 gallon container like in ground and plumbed directly into the side of my pond. It is my first stage skimmer type/pre-filter where the 700 GPH water pump is. That pumps up to my above ground boi-fitler that gravity flows down into the base or reservor of my water fall. the water flow out of the side of my water fall and back to the pond.

Check my hodge-podge of pond pictures below. It might give you better idea what I did my pond filter system. It works really well for me and my pond is always clear now.

Happy ponding,

why not look into a 40 gallon skippy filter... the stocktank is $30.00 at T.S.C tractor supply comp(online or store) that will put your filters volume at 10% of your ponds volume ..thats a real good ratio. and a easy build...no such thing as too much filter.

Don't know that we have that much room were it is. I was thinking ~20 gallon would work; we have a 50 gallon Skippy on our larger pond.

I did min with a 20 gallon and I will tell you that my pond was never dirty, I would go with it, I had it layered as follows from bottom up

Coarse Filter
Finer Filter
Plastic media (pvc tubes, dollar store plastic hair rollers) and I thought it worked awesome!

The only drawback of that is how long it will last. I have seen them burried in the ground at the top of a run and water flows from an outlet down into the pond. The stock tubs will last alot longer.

Not sure how permanent any of this will be. There is always a chance we will move (not any time soon) and if we were to move it would be an upgrade (and that means upgraded ponds). But that would be like 10+ years from now (unless the housing market takes a drastic upswing). Our 50 gallon skippy in the large pond is a Rubbermaid stock tank but I was thinking of using the roughneck because it is super durable (but probably not as good as a stock)
